Your right,I see where the 4 speed auto was available until 2001.They came out with the 5 speed auto (explorers)in 97' but I wasn't sure what all it was available in.I also seen where the 5.0 was available until 2001.I missed that by a year in my guess also.
What I am getting at is was the 302 available with a TTB axle ?
Also what auto trans was with the 302 ?
In Explorers: 1994. In Rangers: 1997
In Explorers: 1996-200(1)? Not sure when/if it was available in Rangers.
So, as far as Explorers go, the 302 and the TTB were never together (from the factory). There are some who have swapped a 302 into a 1st gen Explorer, but I don't know the specifics of the swap.
In Explorers: the V8 was connected to the 4R70W. In think it's basically a descendant of the AOD. 4R55E and 5R55E transmissions were used behind V6 applications during those years.
Yea.. its a 4R70W.. I called my friend at the dealership... said its alot like the AOD.. said hes even seen some people replace tore up 4R70W with an AODE transmission

thats what I was afraid of. Yeah the 302 was never in the ranger. I have a 88 ranger. I was at first thinking about buying an explorer to do a 4.0L V6 swap with the D35 TTB(which is very very common) then I thought well maybe buy an explorer with the V8 and swap in the V8 with the the D35.
It was worth a try. Thanks for the info. So I am back where I started looking for a 91-94 explorer for the 4.0L and D35.
Edit: I think its weird the 302 was used in the explorer in 1996-2000. I can't think of anything else it was used in during those years.
