My buddy and I got into a debate about if tailgates came with a stainless steel topper on them or not. My 78 Explorer has one and it looks very original to the truck, but I haven't seen anything in the literature about "tailgate guards" as an option. Would this have been an era specific aftermarket item exclusive to Explorers in 78/79 or a dealer specific item?
I ordered a brand new 78 Ranger. I don't remember tailgate guards on the option list. There was lots of aftermarket stuff out there, and the dealer,or any repair shop could install one.
Looking at an actual hard copy of the "Ford Truck Accessories" catalog date 7/78 there is no Ford OEM accessory offered that is a tailgate edge guard, aka tailgate topper. Now as far as what some dealerships offed or would source and install, that is wide open.
