I’ve plowed so much snow, I’m in the thousands of hours... and that’s just in a grader. I have an opinion on this.
Plows are on just about everything you can imagine up here, Lada, jeep, truck, car, SUV, ATV, tractor, bulldozer, heavy equipment of all types... 1/2 ton, 3/4, 1 ton, no ton.
New half tons usually are not the best plow trucks, the sales person should know that as well imho, (the salesman should be helping you buy what you need) Assuming you told them your intentions to put a plow on it. I’m assuming you bought it from a Ford dealer?
One of the issues with a half ton, any make, is alot of new ones have crumple zones built into the frame and should not be used, with out risking significant damage. I have no idea if yours does or not.
That said, a lot of half tons here do the job, they get pretty beat though. I do know you can buy light weight plows for 1/2 tons, or jeeps or anything light weight. An 800# HD plow would not be good for it.
As far as EB overheating, I haven’t a clue. A lot of trucks, gas or diesel will over heat with the plow up driving or plowing on a warm winter day with heavy wet snow. Droping the plow when on the highway a few inches makes a huge difference. They all heat up in my experience. Especially the transmission. God forbid you’re doing in it a standard... those are a pain and the clutches are usually slipped all day long...
Plow trucks are usually pretty beat up, the weight out front at that arm, beat the crap out of the entire front end. Transmissions usually don’t last either.
I would agree a 3/4 ton is better, or one ton or bigger. Everything about them is built better for that job, frame, engine, tranmission, front end, you name it. Even then most put on helper or heavier front springs.
Personally, I wouldn’t want a half ton plow truck, it’s just too light weight. But, that said, if that’s what I had, I’d put a light one on it and go plow my personal driveway and never think twice about it.
Just know, no matter what you put it on, it’s going to be hard on it and wear it out one way or another.
You will likely never find a used F150 with the snow plow prep package. You’re better off trading for an F250.
My last 2018 5.0L that burned oil had the package and the funky little switch to shut off the heated seats and other accessories. Why would Anyone need heated seats while plowing in winter? Stuuuuupiiiiid!
