Coolant flush

Doing heads and studs , all new oil cooler + EGR and much more

I want to do a full flush of the coolant system but I want to use distilled water and really flush it well and take my time doing so

It’s a 100 miles back from the shop that’s doing all this work

but I’m assuming If they’re taking the motor apart they’re going to have to add coolant before I leave there, so if I want to do the flush myself and I live 2 hours away, how am I going to drive the truck back without damaging anything ? I don’t want to put expensive coolant in just to flush it

or maybe it’s assumed with all this work i am paying for that they’re going to flush it well and fill it correctly?

you could just fill up with water (as long as you dont live in freezing temperatures) or cheaper antifreeze just for the drive home.

You don’t want to use any antifreeze that may not be compatible with
the one you intend to use. Also if you leave untreated water in the
system you will get rust in a very short time.

interesting thank you for that, i need to discuss this with the shop doing the engine work. If the flush is not included - which i would say it should be, then ill have them put in the old coolant for the ride home and then ill flush it to my liking

When I do any work that requires dumping the coolant system, I dump it into a clean 5 gal bucket and re-use it. I have a pillowcase that I use as a rough filter when it goes back in. IMO there is no reason to feel like the coolant needs to be discarded once it is out of the system.

Also, I just don't see how a shop can do a thorough job of cleaning the cooling system - it is time consuming and 99% of the customers would get mad at the shop for the labor charges.

Then you should do the work before you take it to the shop. If he's by NYC, it's 20ºF this morning......

Hey mark, yes these were my concerns exactly. I want to take my time and flush it right before putting in all the new coolant

Add me to the list for Jack's recommendation - flush it yourself and take a clean system to him. Tell him to reuse the coolant (leave him a clean 5 gal bucket w/ a lid).

Not sure who Tony is...and I'm not in the mood for nonsense today, so I'll be blunt.

I'll start by saying you are foolishly going into this, probably because you don't have a lot of experience. You are approaching this as nitpicking to save money; this is not the motor to do that unless you have a very good skill-set, and if you are farming this out, you don't. Mark has warned you about where to get parts, and that comes from many of us who have over a decade of experience of seeing the issues of poor choices. There is very little I would buy from Amazon or eBay to go into this motor. Someone who is willing to deal with that kind of price drop on an oil cooler still has a lot of cover. And we have seen what a poor oil cooler choices, which will be another mass quantity of dollars for you.

My first dealing with oil coolers started over a decade ago helping Nylyon sort out the same move you are about to make. In a very short time, he was replacing the oil cooler. Mark has also helped countless people with this same issue.

Maybe that's a path you like to take, it's one I try to avoid. If the cost of a refill of coolant has you all discombobulated, this is not the truck for you.

I see you’re trying to help but I think this was a bit much. I called you Tony bc I thought I saw the name Tony in your username.

I am in the process of moving into my truck camper full time; this truck was given to me with no upfront cost to help me get on my feet

do you suggest I tow my camper (soon to be home) on a bicycle ? Maybe a scooter? Pls tell me Tony, what can I afford ?

I comprised a great list, I bought OEM parts through my own research, just because YOU don’t know how to use eBay properly doesn’t mean it’s all fake garbage, you just need to know how to filter them out using reviews , feedback, seller history and reputation.

there is always going to be some people like YOU out there who want to bring people down, but it’s ok. I will succeed, my truck will run great, and I will tow my camper successful with a reliable truck for another 200k. I am going to learn how to take care of this truck MYSELF bc my life depends on it!!!

Wow Moonlit cool a little. Toys is just passing on knowledge gained over many years of watching people get screwed on eBay and Amazon. Now if you have figured it all out to where your gonna get your parts with out being screwed. All Good! But don't hammer on a man for speaking his mind on years of experience. He helps a lot of people and does not agree with some things and says so. I know your in a spot with your truck and trailer situation. You can't take that out on us for giving our opinion. You did ask for it. These guys are the best of the best on 6.0s and most are older gentlemen. They do deserve a little respect.

always respectful until someone belittles me for not wanting to waste $100 on coolant when im literally struggling to survive . You can mind your business too

there is a big difference between opinion and downright rudeness.

“I am not in the mood for nonsense today”

“If you’re squabbling over coolant this isn’t the truck for you”

You call that help?
