Question how to torque spindle nuts?

Hello all, this is my first forum, so please bare with me,
Anyhow i was curious , does anyone know how much torque to use on the spindle nuts on the dana 44 fornt axle of a 1971 Ford F-100 4x4. I had to take my hub apart tonight because 4 of the 5 lug studs broke off this weekend when i went hunting. i got that repaired temporarily and now i just took apert my hubs and pressed new stude in. ive got them back together but it does not spin that freely. i think i over tightned the spindle nuts does anyone have any answers for me?

Assuming you have the proper socket, this is the way I have always done them; Tighten up the nut while spinning the wheel. I do it by feel but I would say to maybe 50-60 ft. lbs. Then back off the pressure. Now just tighten it back to about hand tight, like it would be if you just used your hand on the socket and no rachet, Now just a hair tighter and you are there. You will need to move it slightly to get the pin to index in the lock ring, but I always flip it ( the lock ring ) over first as it may go on the other way. Sometimes the lockring will index right onto the pin but I have had to fiddle with them for several minutes to get them lined up. And of course the outer nut you can tighten up normally.

This procedure is pretty standard for bearings that you pack with grease, but for ones that run in gear oil like on the rear of 3/4 ton pickups, more preload is required.

While rotating the tire, tighten to 50 ft.lbs., then back off 90*, continue to rotate tire, tighten to 30-40 ft.lbs., back off 90*. Install lock ring and pin, turning the adjusting nut so the pin will engage the nearest notch. Install the locknut and tighten to 50 ft.lbs.

rrawlins is this a published procedure? It seems the same basic thing that I have always done except backing it off a quarter turn seems a little vague for a preload. I would prefer my final step to be turning the nut in and not out. It probably works though.

Have you read the threads about how the pressed on drums fit on the studs?

To make the drums fit flush without pressing them on you have to ream out the stud holes.

If you broke studs off-road without ripping a U-J in 1/2 something is wrong with your front end/drum setup, imo.

I have broke studs off on the front end of my 70 3/4 ton "dana 44" because my brother borrowed my pickup got a flat, and didnt titen the spare enough. the lugnuts vibrated off then the studs came out the back and were sheered off by the wheel cylinder. so my question is, were your nuts tight?

i had got a different set of wheels and tires only two months before this, and i tightened all the lug nuts and torqued them all to about 75 ft lbs at that time chris. rebocardo unless all the nuts on that one corner happened to vibrate loose then im thinkin it was intentional maybe. nothing is wrong except they came loose. and willowbilly i do agree it sounds better to make the last turn tightening as you always would with a carb needle screw. less chance of it backing out. thanks everyone for your input and now i will go take it apart again and retorque them to the right specs. greatly appreciated

Does someone else out there have the shop manual procedure? I take my shop procedures seriously and would be choked if after all these years I've been doing it wrong!

Lug nuts should be tightened to 100 ftlbs.
