I’ve got a 1997 ford f 250 with a 7.3 power stroke and I’ve got a trans problem. The truck as an e4od. And when I drive with the truck empty it’s just find but when I put a trailer behind it. The trans likes to slip in 2nd and third gear. If I put the truck on the floor it will grab 3rd gear and hood but as soon as I back off it starts slipping. Wanting to know if I got trans issues or a torque converter problem
Is the trans fluid black? If the trans is really slipping it will burn the trans fluid in a few miles.
The torque converter has a locking clutch. This clutch is applied and released by the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) aka, the computer. It decides when to lock it and unlock it. In second and third gears it usually has the torque converter unlocked.
The fluid looks and smells perfect which is why I jumped on here for help. But I think I’m just gonna go ahead and bite the bullet and get a billet torque converter and build the transmission
