If you only have 1 key, you will need a dealer, a locksmith, or I think Forscan (sp)? I just recently paid a mobile auto locksmith $120 for a 2nd key and remote, including all programming.
Programming the remote is VERY simple. Check youtube for video on your vehicle. In a nut shell get in the driver seat, close the door, press the door unlock button, insert key and turn to the "on" then "off" position eight times quickly ending in the on position. Then press any key of your FOB(s) and that will be it. Then turn key off and test.
I just got a two pack of remotes off Amazon for $14.95. Took me less than a minute to program them both.
And don't get the all in 1 key unless you want to remove the plastic from your ignition on the steering column as the all in 1 (key with built-in remote) is too fat to fit in the plastic collar.
Where do you suggest I purchase a key? And is there any programming needed for the key?
Is the key a plain key that does not need any programming?
.
The key has a chip and will require programming. If you have two keys already programmed, you can do the third, forth, etc on your own. But if you only have the one, you will need a programming device to program it.

Is there any work around if the Excursion only has 1 key?
If not, where do I find a programming device?
Will an Auto Parts store have one? Can I rent one if they are cost prohibitive to purchase one?
My local Home Depot will do it-- but you have to buy the blank from them. Around $70 I think the last time I checked.
My memory is a little foggy on that (along with a lot of other things....) if you go that route does that give you a new "cloned" key that coupled with an original wont work to make more copies or does it give you a true unique key that can work with an original to make more copies?

That's a good question. I do not know.
I'll see if they know at Home Depot later today. It's next door to my job.
