Leaky oil filter

I noticed a few drops of oil in the place I park my truck. Luckily it wasn't concrete and just rock. After pulling my truck into the shop I saw that oil was leaking from where the filter connects to the housing. I remember having this issue a few yrs back. I hate vehicles that leak oil. Im not sure if its the type of filter or what. I tighten usually 1 3/4 or two turns. The type of filter I have on it now is a motorcraft. Anyone have this issue? What filter do you guys recommend. I dont want my truck to turn into some **** bags truck that leaks oil everywhere.

Its the filter, these filters have a tendency to weep oil on these engines.

My Motorcraft FL2051's do the same, I usually notice the oil stains running down the sides of the filter. I only hand tighten the filter.

Lots of times it is not the filter leaking but oil on top of the filter that is drips/runs onto the filter in the indention between the seal area and the outer crimp area. This oil gets blown from that area as you drive it and appears to weep. Take some brake cleaner and clean the area solves the problems more otren than not.

When I change my oil the rubber gasket from the old filter occasionally is stuck to the housing. So, if doubled up on new filter, you will get a slow leak too. More likely what the others have however.

My oil filter leaks as well, and I haven't found a fix yet in the 5 oil changes I've done so far. No drips on the pavement, but a wet and dirty filter body.

I make absolutely sure that the old gasket isnt still stuck up there, make sure the filter mating surface is clean and that the gasket on the new filter is lubed properly, I've tried the recomended number of turns vs. tightening by hand as much as I can. No matter what, my filter always is dirty by ~500 miles into the oil interval.

I had a similar problem on my truck last year. Turned out the filter gasket was dry rotted with cracks. New filter fixed it. I was surprised as the leaky filter I got from dealer.

The first and only time I doubled up on the oil filter rubber gasket I blew about 4 qts of oil on the driveway.

Now I'm religious about checking to make sure the old gasket isn't stuck .

I talked to my Ford guy because I had drips on my oil filter and it's because if they dont let the filter area stop dripping than they can get some oil on top of the filter. As you drive it will run down the side of the filter. I always remove the filter first then drain the pan.

Here's an oil change video and at around 10:30 the tech cleans the residual oil on top of the oil filter to prevent this oil from dripping down later. The key is to not allow any of the old oil to get on top of the oil filter during filter installation.

check to make sure there are not 2 gaskets in there...sometimes the old filter gasket sticks to the engine.

I run Donaldson P502503.
I've looked inside a Champion Labs made LuberFiner LFP2051.
If I couldn't get Donaldson, LuberFiner is on the short list.
