I am trying to figure out what front shoes and spring kit I need. I dont know if this is the original axle and the markings have rusted off. It's on 75 f250 4x4.
It is original to a "Highboy" truck. But there are two versions of the closed knuckle 44. A 44 and a 44HD , if that is it, I have heard of closed knuckle D60. Yours is the closed knuckle from your pic, and 99% likely a Dana 44, but does it have the larger steering *****? One has 8 bolts I believe and the other 12 that hold on the dust/wiper cover on the knuckle that cleans the ball. Also, a picture of the hub can tell you. The internal parts "should" be the same on both but the larger knuckle version had heavier bearings, axles etc. Just putting that out there.
The 60 cover looks quite a bit different I believe.
As far as the brakes go usually the GVW will tell you what size your brakes are. often there are several choices .
Get some degreaser or soapy water and have a scrub at the markings on that left-side flat firstly with a brush (old toothbrush will do) and secondly with some wet-n-dry sandpaper, 400 grit is plenty.
After you do that, wipe it dry. Now spray some white paint at the area. Now wipe that off with your finger or a cloth. The remains should stay in the lettering and make it easier to read.
I've needed to do that on pretty much every Ford axle serial I've come across.
It did not become a matter of safety until the user decided not to adjust the brakes manually every few weeks. It was just something we did back then. And it can feel literally like a full time job sometimes!
All of my cars and trucks with drum brakes had self-adjusting features, but they never worked full time. I'm sure they worked a little, but eventually they would all need some tweaking by me. Believe me, when I swapped in disc brakes I was one happy camper!
And that's the only reason I really want to do it in the rear of the trucks too. Just a lot less maintenance.
I prefer to adjust my drum brakes manually , the self adjusters don't work right half the time anyway. . most heavy trucks to this day require manual adjustment , it's just not a big deal.
Yes, Dustin Daniel is correct. Also quick Identification is Dana44 has 5 lug, Dana44HD has 8 Lug. Also you are spot on, 44HD has the 12 bolt rear knuckle dust/gasket, and 44 has 8 Just rebuilt my 44HD this past summer!
