Getting ready to remove the EGR on a 2011 6.7 .... all I see videos of is people busting the 2 bolts holding the pipe to the exhaust manifold. I understand they make fancy $500 tools for fixing them and whatever .... BUT THERES GOTTA BE A BETTER WAY! There’s gotta be a way that reduces the probability of breaking the bolts ... I hear to spray them with penatrating oil days, NO, WEEKS! before doing the project. And also to warm the motor up before attempting ... I can get with that and do that. Consider it done! But what are some extra precautionary things to try and prevent breaking them .... mind you this truck only has 45k miles .... THANKS!
Spraying them down with penetrating oil after 30 mins to an hour after getting home worked for me. I did that for about a week before I tried loosening them. I also got a 8 mm socket with a long extension, then I wacked the top of the extension with a hammer A few times before trying to break them loose. Both bolts came right out with no issues, the threads looked nice and clean with no damage. I used pb blaster for the penetrating oil. My truck also had 90000 miles when I took them out. They had never been removed before. I did spray the bolts down again after they broke loose then worked them out. The heating method is another alternative that can work.
hope this helps
Used WD40 Bluetorch penetrant oil twice a day, for a week, before startup and after getting home when hot. Use a 1/4" drive ratchet/extension and be patient, beginning with the engine warm. Removed mine at 30k miles. I used a technique of loosen the bolt until tension tightened, then would spray with oil and drive back down a turn or two, followed with loosening a few more threads - repeating this. This was very tedious, but eventually removed the bolts without any issues. I did notice the two bolts removed compared to others, did show some signs of threads stretched. I did tons of reading and YT video watching - with those that easily broke free with no issue and those that broke the head off. Did this all in preps of further plans. Reinstalled bolts with copper anti-seize. Take your time and you should be in good shape.
Figured I’d just come back here and update the thread with my experience getting these bolts out ... they both came out in ONE PIECE! I sprayed PB blaster on them 3-4 times over the coats of a week ... and then I put the socket and extensions on the bolts and gave them a shock with the hammer .... and they came out without ANY issue! But again The truck only has 45k miles so I guess that’s something to consider
