so about 2 months ago i bought my first 7.3 i absolutely love it but last night i was leaving a buddies house and when i put the truck in reverse it felt like there was nothing there. so we pushed it back and i went home to see what the issue was. on the way back i shifted into 2nd and the same thing happened and by the time i rolled to a stop i could put my truck in any gear without touching the clutch. and when it was in gear it was like the truck was off when i put it into any gear nothing would happen. it wouldn't move, nothing. i checked the clutch and brand new slave cylinder (that i just installed) and that seemed to work properly. so i got it towed home hoping that i am not going to have to rebuild the transmission
Free thinking here. Wouldn't the gears grind even if the X-fer was in neutral?
From the description ("...i could put my truck in any gear without touching the clutch."), I'd suspect that something is going on with the input side of the transmission and that presence of a X-fer (or not) does not matter. Naturally this presumes that the motor was still running.
Or, perhaps the shift fork broke and makes it feel like it is shifting gears when in reality the transmission is not in any.
