i have a 1979 f 150 4x4 with a freshly rebuilt 400. it has a t 18 transmission and i have been having problems with it lately. the tranny has not been worked on except for seals but the clutch was replaced once. the pickup has about 130k on it. the clutch looked good and we talked with a mechanic and he said it was fine before he put it back on the motor after the rebuild. it goes into 2nd gear hard sometimes. not all the time but more than half. also when you put it in 3rd gear and let off the clutch the shifter will sometimes kick back and pop it out of gear. it is as though there is a chip in the gear or something because it does not happen all the time about 1/4th the time. it always seems to grind the gears when going into reverse even though i am completely stopped and the motor is just idling. i understand that it has no syncro in reverse so is this just common or is there a problem with the clutch etc. i know there is a lot of questions in this post but any help and/or suggestions would be appreciated.
Sounds like shifter fork trouble, like the 3/4 fork is bent preventing it from going all the way into 3rd?
Put it into neutral and pull the top cover and see if they is any damage.
Some trucks have the big plate on the floor board to allow it to come up without pulling the trans.
ok i have been thinking about this before pulling it apart. it really grinds the gears in the gears w/o a syncro. so i was wondering if maybe it was the clutch. could the clutch need to be adjusted or replaced? any thoughts?
The clutch would not make you slip out of one gear only.
But the grinding sounds like the clutch all right.
To slip out of one gear only would be the fork.
