Starter rebuild
Starter rebuild
The starter on my F350 doesn't seem to be rolling over as fast as it should...you tend to have an ear for that after owning several of these 7.3L trucks over 20 years. I have the Denso offset gear reduction style in it and had it rebuilt about 10-12 years ago from what I remember. The wife's Excursion has the original Mitsubishi style starter with 238,000+ miles on it and is still working fine. I want to go ahead and rebuild both of them and would like to know where I can get parts...probably contacts, brushes, etc. I don't know if the bearings are sealed or they may just need a little oil as I haven't pulled either one apart yet. Just looking for a place to buy parts from as I don't seem to be able to find them on the local parts store websites.
I do not know of a rebuild kit or parts supplier for the Denso, but I know of someone who does.

I don’t know if you want to deal with an out of state company, but there is a great family owned place here in East TN that builds starters and alternators. If you want their info, send me a PM and I can shoot it to you.
If you know what you need, I have found fleabay to be a great source for anything and everything. But beware, USPS is so bogged down right now that it could take weeks to get stuff so if you go that route make sure you can use UPS or FedEx for delivery...unless you can wait 'til spring for it to arrive.
I have used 'Nations Starter and Alternator' for parts: I do not see what I needed on the 'web site'. Gave them a call and they fixed me right up

I got SSJ a rep for you good sir.
I also made note to call Larry, also made note of the folks that 97-PSD said are good people in TN too.

Its worth $500 though. I will gladly pay to never be stranded by my starter again. When I bought mine from Larry B, I was stuck at the camper and had to call one of my subcontractors to come pull start my truck so I could get to work. The failed starter was the 3rd ‘new’ napa starter I had put on my truck. I had a meltdown and a 2yr old style tantrum then ordered the Denso while I waited for help. My pay for losing a day’s work would be insignificant compared to the loss of NO WORK on the project because I didn’t show up that day. Delays on those projects ‘cost’ $100k/day or more. But, I’d pay $150+ to not change a starter on a cold/rainy/snowy day in a heartbeat!!!
$335 Denso starter from Corey at CNC Fabrication - click here for more information
Corey is a stand up guy and I send any business I possibly can his way. Some members have found the genuine Denso for cheaper than that at times and perhaps a search may garner you the same results. Be careful though, the knock-offs are worse and more prevalent than they are for an iPhone.
97-PSD sent me the details for the small and reputable place in TN, their details are below if you want to stick with the Alliant starter.

I replaced my aging OEM starter with a Denso from CNC Fabrication. I did this not only because of the reputation the Denso has, but I needed something that was going to work when I needed it to. I couldn't count on my 16 year old starter anymore. We use our truck to go way out in BLM land at times and I need it to start...
Another reason I went with Denso is because of our 2008 Subaru. A lot of the parts have a Denso sticker or stamp on them and that thing has been rock solid for 135,000 miles. Never needed anything other than an accessory belt and spark plugs. Knock on wood....
We understand if you want to retain the Alliant starter, there is nothing wrong with that. We just want to make you aware of your options available to you before committing to the Alliant.
I created a video of the Denso after the truck sat for 2 weeks, it is linked below if you care to watch it.
