Please Help adding a Driver Side Door Lock

Happy Holiday's Fellow FTE guys! Ethyl *THE* Tool Truck has never had the "optional" door lock mechanism for the driver side door. I have decided to actually fix the door's so they function. The latches finally got so worn out that I was having all kinds of problems. So I bought new latches and wow these doors open and close so nicely. I thought that the passenger door lock didnt lock with the key due to that worn latch on that side also so when it still didnt work after the new latch we found it to also be worn out. I ordered and have received two NOS door lock one for each door of course. I had spent the extra money and used NOS for the latches after hearing your tales of how the quality of the new stuff is. My doors on Ethyl have never been right. The cab has never been locked. I have two needs that I once again am seeking the help of my FTE breatharian. 1. Is there a template for making/drilling/shaping that hole that will have to be made in the driver side door skin? 2. That door does NOT lock right now before we do anything. Any clues to look for thee? I think you are supposed to push the inside handle toward the windshield to activate the lock mechanism and then slide across the seat to the passenger side to exit and then lock that door to secure the cab when everything functions as designed with this passenger door only key lock engineering....to be clear before I add this new key operated lock assembly, .my driver door has never lock period any pointers?

passenger door has the lock mechanism hole..I guess I can make my own template....

driver door no hole yet to add "optional" key lock mechanism

Just cause Ive never taken a picture of the two together prior....ETTT & Brutus.

The doors are exact mirrors of each other. The new lock goes into the drivers door in the exact location of the passenger.

Also, the latch mechanisms are the same, door lock or not, and the slot for the door lock clip is behind the weather strip.

Edit: My cab is conventional. The slot for the lock clip was there, in the non-lock door. I can only assume it will be the same for the cab-over doors. Otherwise you will need to cut the slot.

When I replaced my driver's door, I just made a rubbing of the original and transferred that to the replacement. You can do the same thing by making a rubbing of the passenger and just flipping it over.

Mid-Fifty does have a template, but it's not very good: Instructions - Door lock installation template - Mid Fifty F-100 Parts

Cutting into painted doors is always scary. Just take your time, double check everything, and be careful.

Gary, your description of how to lock the driver's door is correct.

Question however. Your truck has the gull wings or hickey sticks, which indicated a Custom Cab truck which should have had a driver's door lock. So either a Standard Cab driver's door was added to a Custom Cab or a Custom Cab grille was added or the gull wings were added to an original Standard Cab

Good luck.

Thanks..I did need the nice pep talk...lol....I thought I would make my own template from the passenger door doing that rubbing method you mentioned....Im mainly wondering what to look for regarding the driver door not locking.... period.... before I do anything to add the lock Id like to get the door to function---actually lock.

The actual locking mechanism is part "A". It hooks the part behind it "B" to keep it from coming forward.
The outside key mechanism goes into the hole in part "A".

The inside door handle rod connects at "C". Pulling on the handle pulls that part forward. Pushing the handle forward pushes that part back. Through the rocker to the left, it pushes the locking mechanism "A" up and down. If part "A" is there, and the rocker, something must be keeping the inside door handle from moving forward enough to engage it.

In "Locked" position

In "Unlocked" position
