I have a 2002 f350 with the 7.3. It's got manual lock hubs with the shifter on the floor. After shifting into 4 high and locking the hubs there is a tearable grinding noise from the front axle. This only happens when the hubs are locked but not when it's been shifted into 4 wheel drive. It even does it a little right after unlocking the hubs then you can almost hear it free itself and goes away.
I would probably remove the front unit bearings and pull the front axle drive shafts to see what is wrong and do overhaul.
You will see what was grinding if you take it apart.
Maybe good to get Haynes, or simlar manual if you have not worked on these previously?

Haynes is good at some things and horrible at others. If he does not have a good service manual already, I would invite him to check out the link below.
In addition, there is a lot of information on the FTE, in the 7.3L PSD Tech Folder and videos on YouTube. I forget who it was recently that was doing this work, maybe @Lex2002 ? The FTE'r gathered tons of information and advice regarding the work that needed to be completed.
I was working on rear hub oils seals, bearings, brakes ad hydraulic lines. Not front. Sorry. But I did change those front seals, u-joints, ball joints years ago. Never did touch the lockers.
Talking about u joints, does any body have a list of complete u joints for a 1999 F350 CC LB DRW with the double shafts. splicer factory type. I'd like to order the right one's and not have to chase parts. They seem okay but I want to change them anyway. 1/4 million miles it should be changed. I tow heavy now when I have the fifth wheel behind me and don't want problems. Oh 4x4 also.

That is why I wanted part numbers. Going out in a minute to do back brakes and rotors. It is a DRW so a little more work for sure.
If you enter your VIN number here you will get access to exploded Ford parts drawings and correct part numbers (and price) and you can purchase them from where you like.
