I know this probably sounds stupid, but I had no idea until a few days ago that there was actually a real working brake light in the light assembly on the back of the cab, over the back window. I knew the dome lights worked, but the brake light had never worked since I bought the truck.
I removed the light the other day, and found a burned out bulb in the socket. Replaced the bulb with a new one, put a brick on the brake pedal, and on came the brake light. Looks great too!
Today, while driving across Houston on my way to work, I paid close attention to other Superduty's. To my surprise, a large percentage of them had non working 3rd brake lights. Most of them where '00 to '02 models.
I just thought I would pass this info along to anyone else that might have missed this like I did....

Thanks for the reminder!! Its amazing how many vehicles have burned out bulbs, no one checks anymore I guess!
Thats one of my chores I do every Sunday morning, check the fluids and tire pressure, and the lights on both my vehicles, only takes a couple of minutes.
I noticed mine was out this evening (someone told me) and so now I want to change it. I removed the two phillips head screws but still can't remove the lense. Do I just try and pry harder? Or does the whole assembly (with rubber boot) come off before gaining access to the bulb? -Thanks
They tend to burn out because it's a rather hot bulb in a small space. Superduties aren't the only ones with this problem, many cars do with third brake lights.
my bulbs burned out, it a pain in the butt to change right now with the cover on the bed, so im not overly concerned. Still have 2 working regular lights.

The whole lamp comes off as 1 piece, and then you twist out the center socket to replace the bulb.
just a note, recon makes a awesome LED third brake light kit. Super bright and looks great at night with the white LED to shine in the bed. Just my 2 cents. Definetly worth the money. Go Recon!!!
