96 Explorer ABS pump/module replacement

Hello,
I have a 96 Explorer with the ABS light on. I took it to my local garage. They connected a tester up and said that the ABS module is bad. Can anyone provide the procedure for removing and installing a replacement ABS module/pump?

Thanks,
Tim

I've never changed one but here's my 2 cents, get a second opinion, a defective ABS sensor at the front wheels or at the rear differential can set of a ABS light.
Being a 96, I wouldn't even bother unless you need it to get a state inspection sticker.
That being said I looked at mine a 97, and it looks like a pretty easy job. There's 2 inlet brake lines and 3 outlet brake lines (use a flare wrench) and from what I can see on mine is one electrical plug and mounting bolts.
The biggest problem taking it off would be corroded brake line fittings, but being where it's mounted you shouldn't have that problem.
Another problem would be air in the system after your all done. I've heard the Ford dealerships have a special machine to get the air out of a ABS system, you would have to check with them about that. Good Luck!

Here is the latest update. I connected a multimeter to all three sensors and measured ohms. Each one read a little over 1000 ohms. I then put the meter on AC and spun each wheel. All three of the sensors registered a reading and the faster I spun the wheel the higher the reading. I am fairly certain at this point that the sensors are good. Does anyone know if replacing the ABS module/pump on this vehicle requires programming from Ford or a garage with a specialized electronic box?

Just to be clear, did they claim the ABS Control Module is bad, or did they condemn the ABS Hydraulic Control Unit? Did the shop provide you with the diagnostic codes reported and/or troubleshooting that lead them to such a diagnosis? FWIW, the factory service manual does not mention anything about reprogramming being required for either the control unit or the HCU in the 1996 Explorer.

The shop did not give me the code. I am not sure if they said that the control module or hydraulic control unit is bad. Aren't the connected to each other and replaced as one unit?

Problem solved.
I got a used ABS pump/module from Ebay for about $50 and installed it today. Now when I turn the key on the ABS light comes on for a few seconds and goes off just like it did before I had this problem.
Replacing the ABS pump/module was fairly easy on this Explorer. After that I bled the brakes and all is well.
