I am planning to buy a used ZF5 on eBay and install it in my 1986 F250 6.9 truck. I was thinking about getting a rebuilt unit, but it costs about $3600 since I have no core. The used one is just under $1000 and I could probably have it rebuilt by a local guy for another $1000. The question is should I get it rebuilt? If it is rebuilt, what extra/better would I get? The used ones are supposed to be in working condition, but I have no idea how many miles are on them or how well they work.
I think I would just do an inspection of the unit and if all looks good just roll with it.
if it works good change the fluid soon and look for any wear metal.. if none then call it good... if it gives you problems then at least you will be able to diagnose it in the Vehicle and then know what needs to be repaired.

However 1k is too much for a zf....are you 2wd or 4wd? 2wd units bring 250-300 here, 4wd 500-700. I know they're hard to find, but if it were me I'd save up the money, and have cash in hand whenever the right deal pops up.
I need a 4WD. The $1K includes some money for shipping. I would be willing to pay $500-700 right now for a unit, but I have no idea where I would get one. I have found a few local listings with even higher ask prices. One of Craigslist ads I saw was $1200 and you have to pull it yourself.
Some of the junkyards have listings of trucks, but it seems like it's just way too much trouble to find out of the truck is a manual diesel 4x4 and still has the transmission in it. And even then that the transmission was working...

Anyone here willing to part with one?

I just swapped mine from t19 to zf5, I got mine from an f-superduty (what they called them before f450, you may search for f450 too since they're commonly called that), 87-97 it's a 4wd trans with a driveline brake bolted on the back and it unbolts and your transfer case will bolt right on.
Any Transmission from Pull A Part is less than 100 bux.
I know, they're pretty cheap. The challenge is finding one close to where I am or where the truck is. I would definitely go that route if I could determine if the truck in the junkyard listings actually was 4x4 diesel and had a manual transmission.
The thing with the PNP type yards, you have to constantly canvas the yards.
There is www.row52.com and they show a picture of the truck, and list which
engine is in it. Not so much what trans it has.
With the picture you can see the front hubs usually and tell it is a 4x4.
When I lived in Ca. there were 4 yards I hit all the time. 25 miles to 50 miles.
Now here in Nv. only two 35 and 60 miles. Pickings are slimmer here.
Don`t wait till you need some part, you won`t find it. The truck was just crushed
last week.
Iam no four wheel drive expert, but the transmission shouldn`t have anything to do with the front
drive axle. From what I have seen, all 4 x 4 have a front hub sticking out. Should show in a picture
if the guy taking the picture shows the front wheels.
But the picture you see, is not what you see in the yards. They have been picked over, some more
than others. The PNP type yards won`t tell you on the phone what is left on the vehicle. You have to
gosee for your self.
That's a good point. I'm not familiar at all with the 7.3 trucks. Are they all locking hubs for 4x4?
What about the automatic transmissions? Did they have locking hubs for 4x4?Thanks,h.ubk
Depends on the year, my pickup came with automatic hubs. If I remember right, you engaged the transfer case and they automatically locked, to unlock you had to put the transfer case back in 2WD, then back up a minimum of something like 10-15 feet. Could go look in my owner's manual but it's 6° right now. After I bought it new, in about a week I converted it to good old trusty manual Warn hubs.
I should have added, with the Warn hubs locked in and transfer case in 4WD you can switch back and forth from 4WD to 2WD at highway speeds by shifting the transfer case. However the front differential and driveshaft will keep turning (freewheeling) due to the locked in hubs.
