I have been making crazy progress on my '72 and it's getting closer and closer to what I want it to be, but I have hit a frustrating snafu. I want to get the tank out of the cab to make room for speakers and storage, but I really hate the idea of having my gas cap potentially under a bunch of cargo in the bed, as I intend to keep using my truck as a truck. I saw the write up on using a Scout II tank, but I can't find one made of steel, as I would want to modify the tank for an in-tank pump for an eventual EFI upgrade, which would make it nice to be able to weld on. The LMC kit would make it easier, but I'm not sure I want to go that route. I guess I could buy the LMC tank relocation kit and cut it up and reweld it to what I want, but I want to put it out to the experts before I fire up the sawsall.
What a great thread! I searched and couldn't find it before I posted this thread. Thanks for doing the legwork for me! That Suburban tank might just be what I do. I will likely irritate some of you guys on here by cutting a hole in the side of the bed for a filler, though. The plan for the truck is to eventually stick an air mattress and a truck bed tent back there for a bit of father/son adventure when the little one is less little. Or at least when I don't have to worry about changing diapers on the tailgate.

Happy to help!
BTW, if you include this - site:www.ford-trucks.com - in a google search along with your keywords, it will pull up tons of thread from FTE. I've gotten answers to lots of questions this way. Cheers!
I did 31g steel burb tank on mine with in tank pump for efi. factory gm fuel pickup. Fill is on right side now. Took a few minor mods to get it to work
That's what I'm looking at now. What EFI setup did you go with? I am looking at the Edelbrock Pro Flow 4 for my 390, and the Hagan fuel door to make it maximum stealth while being maximum easy to get to while the bed is full of junk. Do you have any pictures of your install?
Please keep us posted on what you do, I'm going to have to follow this one. I'm running the Holley Sniper on my FE already using a stock style tank and frame rail mounted fuel pump. I eventually want to get the tank out of the cab as well for similar reasons. I too want in under bed tank with in-tank pump and side fill. No kids, but plan to use it as a truck and like you don't want to have to worry about keeping the filler clear in the bed floor. I'll probably use the filler door and modified filler neck from an old Ranger bed I've got in the back yard, but hadn't figured out the actual tank or mounting yet.
I think the mounting will go about the same as in the brilliant thread Coastal linked. I have taken a quick spin around the internet today and found this fuel door that looks like it will match the contour of our truck beds pretty well:
I know I'll have to do some cutting and welding to get the right angle on the filler neck, but it will be very nice to have stock-ish functionality. And the fill-thru gas cap is pretty trick. I know I have donated a cap or two to some gas stations. I also like the Holley retrofit EFI pump here, which also comes with some of their hydromat, which is also pretty trick, not having to worry about baffling:
For the level sending unit, I think I will just modify a stock one and install it on the flat circle on top of the 'Burban tank. It looks like if I hole saw the center of it and then drill and install 5 threaded inserts, it will fit there pretty well after shortening the float arm. I know it will not be an accurate level reading while cornering or on a side slope, but it should give me a good idea of when I need to get gas.
I understand the work thing and I have no doubt that you'll be done with this long before I ever start on it.
I've been eyeballing EFI retrofit tanks from Tanks INC for a while. Not sure if you are aware of this company and their tanks, but I figured I'd drop these links here incase they interest you.
It's baffled, they've got a bolt in EFI pump set up for it that uses the Walbro 255 and can be upgraded if necessary. It also has a hole already in it for the 5 bolt fuel level sender, and IIRC you can find a sender on their site for the old Ford style gauges.
87 suburban had an in-tank pump, that is similar to the Grand National/cylone so aftermarket support on pumps and such, 255, 340 and so on. I used matching 1987 burb pickup, 340 lph Holley pump for 700 hp of fuel, very quiet. 255 lph is only good for 500, not enough for nitrous. :)
I have a Dakota digital dash that works with GM fuel level sender. Everything works together, no cutting or adapting.
If you want to use an frame mounted pump get an 1986 tank and pickup assembly.
