Hi everyone back again with a 1990 Ford F-150 that I need some help with- this time just a simple parts location. So, I have a 90 F150 that the previous owner swapped a 5.8 engine and AOD trans into this truck that had the 5.0 in it according to the VIN number. When they did the swap they used the trans mount that was in the truck, which was to narrow for the aod trans and there was one bolt that they somehow fanagled into the trans but it wasn’t doing much as it was missing a bolt so the trans mount was twisted out from under the trans as far as the slotted hole would let it go. Long story short, does anyone know if/what trans mount will fit an AOD trans and the 90 f150 cross member? Or if there is one or if I need to also change the cross member? Lastly if there’s a way to tell the difference between and AODE and AOD? Reason I ask is I went to the parts store and from 87 to 93 the mount that comes up matches what I have, but from 94 up it had a different part number and they couldn’t get the 94+ trans mount for whatever reason to see if it matches what I need, and I know around 94 is when the AODE came around but I’m not sure if the width for the trans mount bolts is even different between the AOD and E. Also my cross member is the one with 3 slotted holes if that makes any difference. Thanks everyone!
What was the original trans in this truck? If it was an AOD then the PO seriously messed something up because the engine swap wouldn't change anything with the way the trans mounts, but if it had a C6 or E4OD originally then you need a different crossmember.
The trans code on the decal on the drivers door pillar will tell you what trans it had, T is AOD, U is AODE/4R70w, E is E4OD, G is the C6 I think.
I wish I knew, but all the door stickers are gone from the driver door, so i am unsure of what trans the truck previously had. I am assuming the AOD is not original tho based on the fact that the trans mount does not fit the trans and the PO also left cross member bolts out/loose, and heck the mount could’ve been turned out at a certain angle to make the one bolt fit since it’s the wrong mount. Really if someone could just point me in the right direction of an AOD trans mount, I can modify the cross member I have or probably find a parts truck somewhere with the cross member I need.
The 5.0/AOD combo was common in these trucks in the late '80s and early '90s so it shouldn't be hard to find, and externally the AODE/4R70w is identical and would use the same crossmember.
Do you have an overdrive position in the dash or is it just “D” with no circle? Just wondering if it had a C6 and the PO didn’t bother to replace the indicator in the cluster.
I do not believe it had the position in the dash for it but I will double check that to make sure. And yeah I figured it wouldn’t be hard to find a trans mount but the parts store only has a match to what I have already and when I search up online AOD trans mount a lot of the results show up for GM vehicles for whatever reason so I’m just struggling to find the correct part to order
So I double checked and the truck does have a D with a white circle behind it, then a regular D, and then 1, so I take it that means this truck was overdrive then? Which if this truck does have the original trans in it that makes no sense as to why my trans mount does not fit the trans.
edit; alright so I’ve decided I am slightly blind haha- after coming to a conclusion that it is the original trans, I decided to throw the mount back in to get another look. Turns out that I just had a weird angle on it, so rather than the mount being too narrow for the trans, it appears that the rear of the trans is off just a little bit and just needs to be pushed over for the bolts to go in. Gonna finish up my fluid change and give it a shot putting it back on.
