Ram 3500 now rated at 1075 ft-lbs and 37,100 lbs towing. Anyone want to guess what it'll be like in 5 years? I'm guessing 600hp and 1500ft lbs with 42k lb rating.
Just a numbers game.
You don't need 1000tq to tow 42K, it's nice to have tho.....
I do more with less. Chevy has bowed out and Ford will release 1100 TQ.
What about the electric trucks...they start out a 509hp and 1000tq
It will take a long time for electric trucks to make sense. No way the current battery tech can hold that amount of power for more than a handful of miles. TFL on YouTube couldn't even make it work towing 3k (I forget the exact number) with a Tesla.
EVs are stupid, a scam, and I will never own that crap.
I’m in CA and they started really cracking down on it couple years ago. I got my classA so I’m set. But biggest concern is insurance. If you drive a dually and pull a trailer over 10k and get in a wreck your insurance will say your under licensed. Bam.
What if somebody runs a stop sign and gets in a wreck? That person is still just as wrong. What if said person is playing with his/her phone and gets in a wreck? Still just as wrong.
If there is a wreck........somebody did something wrong. So where does that leave us? Insurance just say we were in the wrong and...........BAM?
The government already controls too much of our lives....let's not willingly give them more power over us just because of a few bad apples. Freedom. How does it work?
If B++++ somehow 'wins', it's going to get much worse. Torque ratings of imported trucks are the least of my concerns as of now. The mere act of owning a truck in the near future may be at risk.

Ford still has the HP advantage. And whether anyone believes it or not, that DOES make a difference. My 2016 F350 DRW PSD with 3.73 gears @ 440 HP but “only” 860 lb ft torque will out pull my 2018 RAM 3500 DRW with 4.10 gears @ 385 HP and 950 lb ft torque. That is pulling the same trailers in the same areas on the same roads using the same fuel.
And for those that don’t know how to use Ford’ exhaust brake.........The RAM still has nothing over on Ford there either. Learn how to use Ford’s EB and it is fine. 2 miles of 6% grade and a stop light at the bottom.....top the hill @ 70 with 18000 lb pushing me and never touch the service brake until about 150 ft from the light. RAM doesn’t do any better.
I wouldn’t mind seeing a low output option focusing on mpg.
My old cummins was like 325/600. Towed fine.
This. Instead of everybody trying to one up one each other over torque and tow capacity, the manufacturer should be in a competition to see who can get the most mpg out of their trucks. From reading mpg threads in the past, I know a lot of us would not mind getting better mpg since a lot of us do city stop n go driving when not towing or hauling.
You all keep talking about electric trucks? Hybrid is the next evolution!! V6 diesel with electric motors supporting them is the next step. Make huge power with this setup is easy!! Its not an all or nothing game. Wake up...Hybrid is next for the SD trucks.
Isn't the focus on MPG how we got cylinder deactivation and auto-stop-start garbage (not in Super Duty thankfully)?
That is very true and I do think that chasing mpg is a bit of a double edge sword because companies start doing things like what you listed and it seems to create more problems than solutions. How to achieve better mpg whether it's making the vehicle more aerodynamic, using next gen composite material for weight saving, 13 speed transmission, so on, I have no idea.
I will say that I read OTR articles from truck, engine, tire, equipment manfacturers and so on, and they all talk about how they do this and that and it helps achieve 2%, 11%, etc, etc better mpg and it just gets me thinking if the big 3 needs this sort of mentality. Perhaps some members who are OTR truckers could chime in with their experience. A lot of the material could also be just marketing BS and perhaps wishful thinking on my part but I would like a way to "reasonable" achieve better mpg (i.e. no start stop or MDS garbage). I believe the 10 speed transmission is a good step in pursuing mpg and its things like this that I feel Ford should spend time on instead of max tow rating.
I already question how the average person can afford a new vehicle. I wish they’d start working on how to offer a decent truck for $25k instead of trying to build something that can tow mobile homes.
Big numbers sell.........BIGGER numbers sell more......BIGGEST numbers sell MOST!
Regardless of what we SAY we want, the marketers push toward what we spend our money on.
It kind of goes back to the old adage; Don’t listen too much to what people say, just watch what they do.
Fossil fuels alone will never meet the CAFE standards over the coming years. That is why car companies are turning to electric. When battery technology catches up to provide 500 mile range and a 20 minutes time max charge, gas/diesel is done. With the advent of aluminum trucks and engines, that in a normal driving pattern, can go 300k plus miles, you could buy a truck today, and it would run till fossil fuels are gone.
Now in Brazil they run 100% plant based fuels, so they may switch over last....
