Hey guys.
So the time has come and i’m going to do a steering box in my f250 6.0.
Im probably not planning on keeping the truck a whole lot longer, maybe another year or two. She’s rotting out and is just a base model xl. Just a glorified work truck at this point....
Anyway, has anyone had bad experiences with autozone steering boxes? Or have any of you used autozone boxes and don’t have any complaints?
I understand redhead/blue top have very good reputations... but i think for something like this i’d rather not spend the extra money if i don’t have to.
Reviews on the autozone steering boxes by endurance all say that they work great and no issues, and i’m thinking of just biting the bullet here and going with a autozone box... just curious on what you ford gurus have to say or if you have experience with autozone specific boxes.
I’ve personally never had issues with any of Autozones products - but realistically a lot of guys stay away from Autozone
I did mine earlier this year and used a Motorcraft one. I initially thought about redhead but then began reading about quality issues. Have you tried adjusting the box currently installed? If you are only going to keep the truck another year or two adjusting it may get you through the next few years and it wouldn't cost you anything, except maybe a scraped knuckle, lol.

Yes, i adjusted it a couple years ago which helped. I adjusted it again over the weekend and i only got a half turn before the screw bottomed out. I backed it out about a quarter turn. Now my steering is just really stiff , with play still. (Not binding, just stiffer turning. Doesn’t straighten out as much when driving anymore)
I am chasing the death wobble also. Rest of my front end is tight, including axle ujoints and new brakes & wheel bearings
I got new tires and an alignment done sat morning, which caused the death wobble on the way home. I haven’t gotten death wobble in 3+ years... Oddly enough too after the new tires and alignment, the front end felt more squirley. That’s why i decided to try and tighten my steering slop
Give West Texas offroad a call for a quote. They can rebuild yours, regardless of how long you plan to keep the truck it’s not a job you want to do twice.
I researched the crap out of this topic, and you'll drive yourself nuts with the various opinions. I ended up going with a Cardone rebuild from Advanced Auto Parts. The splines that connect to the steering rag joint were a little mashed so it was a little difficult to install the rag joint, but I got past it. It seems to be working well from a slop standpoint, but the friggin seal is leaking where the pitman arm attaches. Super disappointing because I'll have to replace it again in the spring. I don't like leaks.
I would have gone with RockAuto, but with the chances of the rebuild being crap, I wanted to purchase something local with the lifetime warranty.
