I purchased my truck new in 1996 in Colorado due to the fact I couldn't find a CC dually 5 speed in CA, (valve cover has label stating that the vehicle meets all CA emissions). All the sales reps keep trying to convince me that I didn't actually want a 5 speed - wrong on all counts. As a rowing coach, I definitely wanted the manual because I would trailer rowing shells coast to coast a couple of times a year and fellow coaches that had auto trans had been experiencing trans getting hot and developing problems. I did not want that for me. I've been extremely happy ever since with my choice. After a bit of history, here is my question - I had my truck in the shop to R&R the flywheel back many miles ago and the mechanic mentioned that my struck was "49 Stater". That was it, no explanation as to the meaning. I've been wondering all this time what did he mean.. The gurus out their must have an explanation to satisfy my curiosity.
Thanks.
If the valve cover sticker is OEM and says CA, you are a "50 Stater". The sticker on a 49er is going to be a bit wordy but still clear that is 49 states and NOT CA.
You've had it smogged multiple times, right? You can look at your smog paperwork for something like "Certification" or "Standard" and find "Federal" for a 49er, or "California" for a 50 stater. EDIT: You are smog exempt, right?
When I did the Clunker trade in, the guy wanted proof it was a CA truck, and my last smog test had "California" on it, but it was a gasser.
The California emissions trucks have AB code injectors, which are split shots and a little larger (120 CCs compared to 90 CCs AA code in the 49 state trucks.) Also the computer has different tunes on it to run the split shots. There is a pulse dampner on the fuel pump on the Cali trucks, 49 state don't have that. The glow plug relay has a bus bar on it that splits off the wiring for each side for the glow plugs, while both sides wiring bolt directly to the relay on the 49 state trucks. Some of the things I can think of off the top of my head.
The 96 and 97 Cali trucks were a different breed from the rest. I have a CA truck, but it's a federal 1/25/1995 build date, before they got into the split shot AB's and MIFx flash on the auto trucks.
Since it's smog exempt in CA anyway, you dodged a bullet by getting a 49 state federal truck. everything is much more common and not CA specific.
