I am trying to fix my brother's 1997 F250. With the key in the ignition, the ignition switch would not turn. By the grace of God, after banging on it, it let loose. However, after turning the truck off and removing the key, it's doing the same thing but it let loose without force. Will putting graphite on the key help and/or fix the problem? Will replacing the Ignition Lock Cylinder fix the problem or is there something more going on?
I'm new to the forum. In advance, thank you so much for your willingness to help and point me in the right direction.
Perhaps..... Previously someone put some sort of lube in it. You may try some brake cleaner or other solvent and then re-lube it with the proper lock lubricant.

Is your steering wheel free? If wheel has tension on it from tires pulling, such as if you're parked on a hill with wheel turned, the lock mechanism could be loaded on the key cylinder.
97, so as old as dirt, the key is work out, or the cylinder is worn out, get a new cylinder for $30 at autozone and you will be back in business in about 30 minutes, assuming it takes 20 to get to the parts house and back
Worn lockset normally happens over time not all of a sudden/right now.
If it was lubed with the wrong lubricant and it's loaded up with "CRAP" need to pull it to clean it, do not try to clean it in place as now all the garbage that was in it is now in the column and will cause you grief.
