I use the VR1 10w30, hot oil pressure in my motor is excellent. I'm of the opinion that unless the bearings are knocking, or pressure is very low, heavier viscosities aren't necessarily the best idea.
The only thing that gives me pause is they state "3 months or 3 thousand miles". Take that literally that would get a little spendy. The reason for this is because racing oil doesn't have all the level of detergents or dispersants that extended oil change intervals require. Makes sense, I guess. I've decided not to worry about it. So far so good.
I see no reason to use a 20w50 as thats a 30 point spread for oil shearing and it does not have a very high HTHS. The 10w30 actually stays in grade longer and has a better HTHS. I will say for the cost of the VR1 in 10w30 and looking at the add pack you would be at the same level running a 10w30 HDEO. The Ford requirements is still very high on Phosphorus and Zinc and it has a complete detergent package.
I use Castrol GTX in my newer engines and the 01 Focus is topping 250,000 miles. Last time I had the covers off it was clean with a slight golden color on the aluminum.
Thus a far cry from the Pensoil engine I saw in the 80’s that only had room for the rocker arms it was sludged solid! What a pain to clean and rebuild that slimy crusty mess!!
