What is available new or readily availabe used for a more rigid, better sealing and possiby better looking valve cover. Any other favorite valve cover gaskets, currently have the cork Fel-Pro. I purchased them locally. I'm pretty sure the FEl-Pro RACE kits I used before had more of a rubber gasket....
Soaking the cork gaskets in water overnight before instalation helps them seal better. The rubber looking ones from fel-pro are also a good gasket and you don't have to chisel all that junk of when you change them for whatever reason, plus the rubbers don't break sometimes when you just want a peak under the valve cover.
AS for valve covers I like the "powered by ford" stockers, or those golden ones you can find on the old mercury engines.
What's a high performance Ford without a set of Ford Racing valve covers? Give your Ford that fast, furious look with custom-designed valve covers. Features include PCV/oil fill holes, triple chrome plating for long lasting great looks, and the Ford Motorsport logo stamped into them so you can show them off to your friends.
Sold as a pair.
at $58.95, they can't be that impressive. I want something, that does not flex when I put some torque on the valve cover bolt.
BTW, why does the FE only have 5 valve cover bolts? It's like they wanted leaks?
No those are the stamped steel covers that I am using. They sell good aluminum ones also. They are not chrome plated. I think they are available in a black or polished version. They are over $200. I also wish there were about 9 bolts per cover too. You gotta be careful when cranking down aluminum. They don't flex, they break.
Both of those pictures are from Mustangs Unlimited. The Cobra Lemans polished cover on top is in fact the Ford Racing one. I am reasonably sure the part number is M-6582-A427. The other one is the reproduction 427 "Pent Roof" cover.
You can also get the Cobra one in plain alum, and black wrinkle. Blue Thunder makes them plain as well like a Cobra Jet valve cover. Branda and Cobra Restorers carry the entire Blue Thunder line. As well as the Pent Roofs too. Be prepared to spend 125.00 or so for the Pent Roofs, and mid 200.00 for the cast alum ones depending on the design.
The Motorsport ones you listed above are the stamped ones.
I do agree that the chrome "Power By Ford" are some of the best looking. However, they are hard to come by and not being reproduced that I know of. Perogie does claim to be able to supply good used ones.
I have the Ford MS Lemans cast covers; they're only $160 from Jegs or Summit. Very nice quality although I had to do a little file work on the inside to get them to clear my end stands. The other problem I have is that there is no gasket retainers on them so, as you torque them down, the gasket has a tendancy to squeeze out. I'm having hell getting the leaks stopped. I bought a bottle of the latest and greatest sealant (The "Right" Stuff) that is supposed to be better than a rubber gasket. It better work for $13.00 a bottle! My fear with this stuff is that it will work too well.... Maybe FEs were just meant to have puddles of oil under them?
Wow, 2 bolts. They must be "marking their territory" all of the time.
I wonder if anybody has tried to put in a few more bolt holes?
Another crazy thought I had , was a 2 piece valve cover. The top half could be removed with a quick release to check rockers etc. Something that sets down into a nice rubber seal, flip a lever to latch them down and make the seal...Hmmmmm???
We just received the '04 Ford Racing book, and the back pages show some "Holman Moody" valve covers. I think you have to go through Holman Moody to get them though. It's kind of neat to see that Ford hasn't forgotten the FE and it's racing heritage from the good old days.
