E4OD differences?

I'm new to the group but have been using it as a resource for years. So as my first posting to Ford-Truck.com, I have a question about the E4OD casings.

I know there are generally 4 types of E4OD transmission casings. 4x2 (SBF, BBF) and 4x4 (SBF, BBF). I locally picked up a used cheap transmission, and planned to use it for mock-up purposes and as a core for a new one. But when bolting it up to my BBF, I noticed this transmission doesn't have holes for bolting up a starter.

Is this still an E4OD? What did this transmission come out of? is there an adaptor Im missing?

I appreciate all the help!

@KennedyCustom

First and foremost... WELCOME to FTE. Thanks for finally joining us, as a long time reader.

Based on the terms you used above (BBF & SBF), I'm thinking your thread might be better suited in one of our other FTE sub-forums that covers the genre's of gasoline powered trucks originally equipped with either big block Ford 7.5L/460 or small block Ford 5.8L/351 series engines.

The '99-'03 7.3L trucks that Ford made with automatics only used 4R100 transmissions, for a diesel application, both being factors which imposed a few evolutionary differences from the E40D transmissions you are trying to compare.

I think if your thread were moved, you might find more similarly situated enthusiasts who could offer more relevant experience.

However, before moving your thread, I wanted to check in with you first to see if there is some other reason why you posted in this particular diesel sub-forum, and to also ask you what year/model/engine/genre Ford truck are you working with that is motivating you to ask about the E40D?

Sorry, that's wrong.

There are three E4OD cases. SBF, BBF, and diesel. There is NO difference in the case between a 4x2 and a 4x4. The extension housings are different, but the cases are not.

Did it bolt the BBF? Were there holes in the engine that didn't have corresponding holes in the transmission? If so, this is a diesel case. And yes, that is an E4OD.

But not a 99-03 diesel, correct? It would be a diesel from years prior. I want to move his thread to a forum of owners with similar vehicles, but am still not sure what he has, or what he is working with.

It doesn't have an input speed sensor and it has a provision for the output speed sensor on the tailshaft housing so it is not for a 99-up application. Your gut feeling is correct.
E4OD for either an early DI van or even an IDI pickup.

The E4OD was not in any 99 or newer truck. It was replaced by the 4R100 by then. And the trans pictured is not a 4R100.
