Just recently got my '64 f100 running. Noticed that anything above 40 mph I have extreme like-death wobble symptoms. To the point where I had to pull over and turn around and come home. At first when it started at 25 mph it sounded like a flat tire, then as I accelerated around 40 it began to shake and made me grab my steering wheel with white knuckles.
Any reason/ideas why this would do this???
Thanks
Oh boy! theres a few reasons.
1) Bad king pins.
2) Bad tires , tread out of round, dry rot etc.
3) To much toe. ( wheels pointed in or out)
4) Bad Tie rods.
5) Out of balance tire
6) Bent rim.
7) Bad shocks.
8) Bad bushings.
9) Bad or broken rag joint. ( rubber tire between the steering column and the steering box.)
10) any combo of the above.
I'd say it's time to jack up the front end and have a look.
Is the wobble in the steering wheel? Or in the seat? If it is in the seat, like your bottom is shaking, then it is driveline related. If it is in the steering wheel, then it is front end related. Possibilities:
Tires: Split core, tread separation, bubbling sidewall. If old, out of round and flattened.
Alignment: Tie rods, drag link, ball joints, steering gearbox, front axle alignment.
Most likely: Alignment, if not tires.
Driveline: Engine mounts, loose bellhousing/transmission, U-joints, differential input bearing, rear wheel bearings.
Most likely: U-joints and/or diveshaft support bearing (if present).

it almost sounds like a flat tire, and a flapping sound kind of at the start .where i was driving theres a wall so i could hear all the noises, then the flapping sounds stops and it begins to wobble like somethings loose...the steering if fine at low speeds and the drivlines fine..the tires arent balanced but it seems to be coming from up front on the pass side.and this just started too..any more input would be greatly appreciated.im trying to narrow it down,in my $$$ situation it would suck to spend $100 on somehting and find out it was something else, but i guess thats life..
Had this happen to me on my first truck, a 1957 F100.... That was of course a long time ago, seems it had something to do with shims in the front end being removed??? Feels like the whole front of the truck will either remove itself or take off without you. I took it into an "alignment" shop that does other than factory spec setting and the guy worked it out for me.
Welcome, and good luck! --MG
ima goober and didnt check the right side and realized later that 3 were broken and all were loose..now that makes me think even more but that seems to be the problem for now..thanks sean
