Pitman Arm Puller

I have a 1971 F250 CS that I am replacing the steering gearbox on. I have the old gearbox out and am trying to get the pitman arm off of it. I rented a pitman arm puller from Autozone, but the fingers are too thick to get between the arm and the gearbox. Has anyone tried a different puller that can fit in the gap (it's roughly 1/8") and where I could find it?

You could always try using a pickle fork... Not sure how easy it would be with the steering box out of the truck though.

While back had the same problem. Just bought the puller from autozone then hit it with the grinder. Another time had to remove the steering box and have it pressed off. Just rember to be gentle with the box if your reusing it.

Buy one and grind it. wd40, tighten, pound with 5lb sledge till it pops off. suggest eye protection, gloves, in case it comes at you.

Yup, buy and grind. I got mine from Harbor Freight. I measured the gap between the box and the top of the arm with feeler gauges; on my truck it was about 0.160". I then painted some prussian blue on the arm fingers, scribed a line on the puller where it needed to be ground with some calipers and went at it with a grinder. Slid right into the gap and pulled the arm off without a hitch.

Thanks for the suggestion of just modifying a standard pitman arm puller. I think that will probably be the simplest and quickest solution.
