On my 1977 F150 I'm trying to replace the pitman arm / draglink. The end is so large I can't fit a pitman arm puller over it. I've tried 3 that I have. I think I'm going to have to saw a slit in it to get it off. Any suggestions?
Yes the pitman arm connected to the power steering box is what I am talking about. I should have measured the depth needed for the pitman arm tool as I think it is bigger than the 2 1/2" specified for LMC's pitman arm puller. I'll measure that again and see if that will work.
I tried the gear puller with no luck. I'll visit that again though. Thank you 77&79f250.
Also, the pitman arm I ordered came from Rockauto. I ordered the Moog brand. When I opened the box it had the word FORD cast into it. So maybe it's old Ford stock??? No idea, just thought I'd share in case it helped. And it has a grease fitting like most Moog parts.
As far as the pitman arm if the 2 or 3 arm kept slipping off, you might of had to big of a puller? Or you can use some HD wire (metal coat hanger wrapped around all the arms) to hold the teeth clamped in place.
Apply lots of PB blaster and tap it (pitman arm) with a hammer on the side when tightening the puller and it should pop right off.
A "pitman arm" with a grease zert...never seen one of them.

The older pitmans had the ball in them and not the drag link. Before you spend more money, you should convert your 77 to 78-79 steering. It has better handling characteristics. Return the pitman and get 78-79 stuff
in my gallery I have a folder where I did this conversion.
Apply lots of PB blaster and tap it (pitman arm) with a hammer on the side when tightening the puller and it should pop right off.
After I did the penetrating oil and tightened the puller, I went into the house for about 15 minutes. Came back out after I heard a LOUD noise and arm was off.
Try a little heat on the pitman arm once you get some tension on the puller. If done correctly, it wont hurt a thing. Not cherry red or anything, just warm it up.
For future reference, for my '79 4x4 box the standard pitman arm puller available at my local parts stores was too small to fit over the pitman arm. I ended up ordering this guy:

Yep, that's how I got mine off using the "Loaner" puller from Advance Auto Parts, tightened up and went to something else and soon heard a "pop" and it was done. I was pulling mine to install a Red Head Steering box.

I did that same swap back in 1986 when I first bought my '77 F150, it had just 35,000 miles then and already that "inverted Y" type steering had worn out the ball joints and drag link and pittman arm joint and was not a 'good steering" ride. '78/79 style is much improved, the drag link has both joints made in it, and it follows the track bar so no "bump steer" or "toe changes" with bumps and dips. At 105,000 now I just a couple thousand ago replaced the drag link for the first time since, and tie rod ends are still tight as new as they only move now when you steer the truck, not on bumps, dips, etc.
