Rear end advice

I have a 1978 f150 4x4 that I’m looking to make into a daily the rear end leaks from the pinion seal and the center section itself. I believe it’s a posi rear but the clutches are burned up so I would like to rebuild it with new bearings and everything especially since it looks like the previous owners may have run the truck with very low gear oil. I guess my question is should I buy a full rebuild kit with posi from jbg or would it be worth while just to buy a whole new center the difference I saw was about $200. What would y’all do? I’ve never done a rear my brother and I redid the front diff but I could see the new carrier being worthwhile because it just bolts in and is so little trouble. Let me know what y’all think. here’s the center I’m thinking about https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Ford-...1049345-31-350

If you don't have the tools and experience setting up a rear end is a challenge that may cost you more to do yourself in the end. anyone can get one to work the trick is to make it quiet and make it last.

I haven't looked for a 9 inch in a long time but it shouldn't be that hard to find a good used set up. open ones used to be a dime a dozen. I don't know anything about the new ones you listed but I'd be skeptical until you research them.

That price is scary cheap to me for a 100% new unit.

however selfishly I hope you buy it and report back on its performance over time.

You might want to check on that yoke size, 1310 seems kind of small for a pickup.

Check into Quick Performance. I just ordered a new set of gears, a Truetrac, and master bearing kit. The prebuilt section with the Eaton was about $400 more than the parts. The Limited slips I recall being a good bit cheaper. Being as I had almost all the tools necessary, I decided to do mine. Give them a look, good folks to deal with.

Try Speedmaster for a 9" diff like the Speedway unit. I have used about ten of them. While "much" of their stuff is questionable , their diffs are surprisingly good. The "posi" is billet steel which is a big plus. Every part they use is stronger than what is in your truck now. I rarely promote them but in this case whoever is "building" them is doing a good job. No noise either . Make sure you use the Ford friction modifier or a lube with it in it already. + there is still value in selling your old diff.
