2015 6.7 How many miles are too many?
I have my eye on a 2015 Platinum that looks to be in great condition. The price is a little high but the condition of the truck probably shows in the price. But the mileage is 185,000. Its had 3 previous owners. The first two barely put any miles on it. The third owner pulled a goose neck and piled on the miles. So my question is, if the truck passes the eye test inside and out how many miles are too many when considering the purchase? Everything on it is stock so no delete, etc.
Thanks

My question isn't about the financial end of things. Its about the mileage, i.e. reliability. What do I have to take into account for the next 75,000-100,000 miles as far as repairs. I understand that no one can predict the future and anything can happen but what are the average repairs that raise their ugly head in that mileage range.

Looking ahead you want to run it to 285k - 300k....... Say you run it another 5 years and it will be a 10 year old truck....
You should expect to do a motor and trans, some of the more expensive electrical / computers, rebuild the front end, a couple of brake jobs and two sets of tires.... Being a Texas truck the body should go another 5 years without too much worry.
Some depends on what you are pulling.... and how much of this repair work you will do or a dealer will do.... That truck is coming into a period of it's life where it will need to be maintained.
Again, just my opinions... but things to consider.

So you want to essentially roll the dice on a truck with 185k and put another 100k on it? For 31k you better negotiate because there will be issues. Its a fools game to want to take these trucks to 300k unless you're a dedicated original owner and have gotten all your financial use out of it or get it cheap enough and prepare for major repairs. The current market is driving the price of this truck up where it should be.

I read somewhere that these are 300k mile motors and there is a Ford metric to that effect .
but you have to take this with a grain of salt.....if 100% of the motors will need a rebuild by 300k miles....bell curve math will say something like 25% of the engines needed a rebuild very early or very late....they did not need rebuilds all at once exactly at 300k

Used trucks right now are greatly inflated price wise. You can not get good financing on used trucks. You can not get good financing on repairs for used trucks.
Sharpen your pencil if you think you *MUST* buy a truck right now and buy new, with new warranty, because the used truck bubble will burst at some point in time.
I know........this is not what you wanted to hear; but for something you want to make it to the 275,000 to 300,000 miles mark, why mess with a great unknown.

185k is nothing on a 6.7. These guys saying you will be rebuilding the motor and trans at 300k well idk what they are seeing or hearing but it’s wrong. The 6.7 has a 500k mile b10 life and I see them all the time with 400k+ miles and still running fine. The 6.7 is a very overbuilt platform and the motor and trans are good to over 500k miles with proper maintenance. We are talking 6 bolt mains, CGI deep skirt block etc...that’s the kind of things you see in NEW big truck motors. lots of guys buy them at 200k + miles and never worry about it. If it’s the truck you want I wouldn’t worry about the miles at 185k.

Assuming that the truck is in good shape, mechanically and physically...31k sounds a little low to me, these trucks are in such high demand the values on kbb or nada are so far from anything real to go on, easy way to see what the wholesale value is just go to one of these sites that buys cars, most of them are lowballing with the hope to steal something, I'd venture to say you will see buy values in the asking price range give or take 2k.

ive been buying and selling trucks for years. Ford GM Dodge Ram diesels and gas. One thing is for certain diesel truck prices never really go down. The new trucks are 80-100k and most people would rather spend the used money than the new money. Sure the market fluctuates a bit due to tax season and covid but diesel trucks never get cheaper they just go up and up.
