Has anyone replaced their steering column bearings?
I have tilt steering in my truck, which does not work properly. It will not stay on the setting I like, and the wheel has side-to-side, up and down play in it.
There's got to be some worn bearings in there somwhere that I can change.
I think a former owner of this vehicle liked to pull himself into the cab via the steering wheel.
I dont konw of bearings, but i do know there are bolts or pins in the stearing column that will come loose and cause that sort of play. Guy from school had a bolt come out of the column and he could almost tilt his stearing wheel sideways. hehe.
I'd say check the bolts. I dont think that the bearings would ever wear out unless you dont drive in a strait line.
Hi I just finished replacing the upper bearing in my 96 F150
F4DZ-3517-A upper bearing
FODZ_3518-B Sleeve for the spring
F3XY_3L539-A Thrust ring that goes between the top of the bearing and the sleeve and spring. Not to hard of a job. Good luck. Jim jimc@nightowl.net
I didn't see your post before starting a new thread. I am having the same trouble except I don't have a tilt wheel. The upper cone of my column has 2 bearings that I am trying to replace. Hopefully someone tells us how. If you want an idea of what I have done so far this is what I posted.
The bearings in my steering column are shot. I purchased the new bearings yesterday. I removed the steering wheel. I took the four mounting bolts out and dropped the steering column down. I removed the ignition and the shrouds. Took out the two screws from the upper cone and pryed the bottom lever to remove the cone. The cone will only slide as far as the rest of the ignition will let it. There is a nylon piece that connects with another nylon piece in the rest of the column. The piece in the cone is what the ignition rotates when it is turned. I am stumped at this point as what to do next. Does anyone know how to get past this point without destoying anything?????????????
