I have gotten the NEW 302 in my 91 F150 running and I notice the fuel pumps in the tanks are noisy. (The front pump more so than the rear pump.) The sound is the same pumping sound when you first turn the ignition to ON. Only it is loud enough to hear over the engine running.
Is this a sign they are on their way out or is there something I could do to relieve their whining pain?
It is a sign of back pressure and it does indicate that your pump is going out . as jbrdrummer has stated his is the rear so was mine. I have yet to replace mine but the day is coming. my pump is so loud that ppl comment on it when I get out at the local stores parking lot. I had it looked at by the local ford dealer and i was not happy with their diagnoses. there fix was to replace both pumps. that would be because my rear pump is failing causing fuel to dump into the front tank and if that tank is full then it dumps on the ground. so some day soon i will pull the bed and replace both pumps and their sending units.....
you may also want to check the fuel filter it should be located on the frame rail drivers side near the front tank or mid of both tanks on the rail. and you would have to use a special tool to remove it you can get it from napa. if your filter is plugged that would cause back pressure. and cause the pumps to become a little louder because they are working harder do do the job.....
Is it easier to pull the bed off the truck to get at the fuel pumps or just drop the tank?
My rear pump is shot and is in need of repalcing.
Thanx for the responses.

if you pull the bed off it is real easy to work on the fuel pumps no struggling to get to the top of the tank and you dont have to worry about putting the tank back up into its straps. I have done this both ways and it was easier and more convient to pull the bed. have a couple of your friends come over to help, unbolt the six bolts disconnect the light harness. 4 ppl work best to pick the bed over the bumper and set it down on some saw horses. I used 4 ppl keeps the bed from flexing to much. pull your pump install new one (check the other one if you want) and then reset your bed. align it then tighten the bolts back up. your down all in a days time.
I have been having a problem with my 1990 f-150 my fuel pumps will run for 5 to 8 min before they go off and while they are running the truck won't start and if it does start it runs real bad like it wants to stall and the engine comes on. after about 6 mins the engine light goes off and it runs fine I have replaced the back fuel pump and it still runs the same. I have replaced the fuel filter, fuel regulator valve, egr valve and the 3 senors below it, and the idle air control. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Thank you
bob, you need to pull your codes to see what's going on before going any further...check out this post by steve83 for instructions on doing it yourself.
I had the codes checked and it came up #33 EGR closed, I bought a new one. #25 Knock sensor and a #41 System lean. Could the knock sensor be causing my problem? I know the system is running lean but where do start with something like that I have already check all the lines for leaks and came up with nothing. I have also been to two mechanics one told me the EGR was bad and the other said the fuel pump. I replaced both and it did not fi the problem.
My rear ful pump is loud as hell, I am going to replace fuel filter soon to see if it helps, I hope it does....If you lose one fuel pump, are the tanks connected so that you can just use one to pump both tanks?
