Steering column bushing

I upgraded my steering column with one from a 74 f250 and all was ok until I pulled on the wheel to get in the truck and realized there was roughly half an inch play side to side so I checked out the column and at the bottom there is some sort of plastic bushing to keep the shaft centered which is just completely worn out is this a common problem and has anyone come up with a better fix than just the plastic such as a bearing.

Thanks kyle

Garbz, azratrod and I took one apart last weekend easy to fix.... Garbz will know where to get the parts. if you lub it good it will last a long time. not sure if anyone has replaced them with a bearing or not, but you probably could!

New Bearings are available from DC along with new taper bushings. They should have them at the Car and truck shop over in Orange.

EZ fix if it's the original 1961/64 steering column, but it ain't! The OP said he swapped in a 1974 F250 steering column, the part he needs will not be found in any 1961/64.

The plastic part you are looking at is not a bushing, it's this:

C5TZ-3D681-A .. Lower Steering Column Bearing Retainer / Obsolete / See below.

Applications: 1965/66 F100/250 2WD w/M/S / 1967/77 F100/250 2WD & F350 w/M/S / 1969 F100/250 2WD & F350 with P/S from serial number D96,001 / 1970/77 F100/250 2WD & F350 w/P/S.

The retainer fits into the bottom of the steering column, the lower steel bearing (C3DZ-3517-A) and its nylon sleeve (B1AZ-3518-A) nestle inside the retainer.

Both the pre-lubed lower bearing and nylon sleeve are available from Ford. (These parts will also be found in 1961/66 F100/250's with the ORIGINAL steering columns. The lowers are the same as the uppers).

C3DZ-3517-A = MSRP: $10.68 // FTE sponsor PARTSGUYED.COM price: $7.69 // B1AZ-3518-A = MSRP: $10.12 / PARTSGUYED.COM price: $7.28.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With a swapped-in steering column, the upper bearing and sleeve are not the same as the lowers!

F23Z-3517-A (replaced D4TZ-3517-A & B, E1FZ-3517-A & B) .. Steering Column Upper Bearing / Obsolete

Applications: 1973 F100/250 2WD & F350 from serial number S40,001 / 1974/79 F100/F350 // 1981/97 Escort/Lynx / 1984/92 Tempo/Topaz.

E2AZ-3518-C (replaced E2AZ-3518-A, D1AZ-3518-A) .. Upper Bearing Sleeve / Obsolete.

If you need the upper bearing and sleeve, there are dozens available NOS.

Applications: 1973 F100/250 2WD & F350 from serial number S40,001 / 1974/79 F100/350 / Myraid 1971/91 FoMoCo Passenger Cars.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What tapered bushings Dave (garbz2) is refering to, I dunno...there is no such thing. The upper and lower sleeves have a slight taper to them.

AFAIK, the retainer is not reproduced. I looked in Carpenter's 1957/66 & 1967/79 repro truck parts catalogs...it's not listed. Not listed in Truck/Car Shop catalog either.

C5TZ-3D681-A =

ANTIQUE AUTO SUPPLY in Arlington TX has TWO = 817-275-2381.

GRIESEL MOTOR CO. in Okarche OK has TWO = 405-263-7242.

MILLER OBSOLETE PARTS in Binghamton NY has TWO = 607-722-5371.

TISON MOTOR CO. in Estill SC has THREE = 803-625-2551.

Bill,

We took apart the basic same column as Kyle. And believe it or not it had a steel retainer bushing in the top Head and a plastic one in the bottom. Seing as Bill W owned the column i am 100 Percent sure he was quite aware he was looking at a 65 66 unit.

My stock 69 4x4 column also has two steel sleve/bushings/race/whatever.

Kyles truck is highly modified to obtain the power steering he wanted.

Sleve/Bushing/race Potatoe/Patatoe

In any case Dennis Carpenter reproduces them in plastic.

'66 F100. 3 Speed Column Rebuild

I am also in the process of rebuilding my column.
The "rag joint" coupler is shot as well.
When I pulled the shift tube out, I found that the bottom
end of the tube is worn thru on 1/3 of the tube and plastic sleeve.
That sleeve covers like the last inch or so, of the tube, the top
of the tube looks like it is new.
Bearings are in need of replacement too, naturally.
I keep going from site to site trying to get the part numbers all
compiled, then I come across this topic.
Carolina classics has a part # 15841 called lower bearing retainer
that has a set screw in the description, but don't have a photo.
Excluding the top end of the column, above the bearing (spring and
tapered bushing)
This is my list for parts needed, Does it look right?
Upper sleeve 1 - B1AZ-3518-A
Upper + lower bearings 2 - C3DZ-3517-A
Lower bearing retainer 1 - C5TZ-3D681-A
"Rag joint" Coupler 1
I haven't taken the steering shaft out yet because I don't want
the shift arms to get lost or out of order until I get replacements.
The rubber boot on the shifter in the pic is split on one side also.
Don't know if it needs replaced or not? sure is sticky and pliable
for being so old.
This issue would be a prime one to make kits available for.
Any help will be appreciated greatly, thanks. T.

It does now.

2) Upper/Lower sleeve: B1AZ-3518-A
2) Upper/Lower bearings: C3DZ-3517-A
1) Lower bearing retainer C5TZ-3D681-A
There are two different steering couplers (aka 'rag joint') for 1966 F100/250 2WD's.

C5TZ-3A525-A .. Steering Coupler / Larger pin is .41" O.D. / Obsolete / 58 available from FoMoCo Dealers/obsolete parts vendors.

Applications: 1965 F100/250 2WD, 1966 F100/250 2WD before serial number 900,001.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
C6TZ-3A525-A .. Steering Coupler / Larger pin is .56" O.D. / Obsolete / 70 available from FoMoCo Dealers/obsolete parts vendors.

Applications: 1966 F100/250 2WD from serial number 900,001.

The serial number is the last 6 digits of the VIN.

The 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog is available on a CD from hipoparts.com for 22 bucks.

You can get the bearings/sleeves from Ed, but you cannot get the lower bearing retainer or the steering coupler as both are obsolete.

I listed sources that have the lower bearing retainer (post #5), found a bunch of steering couplers...but I need to know which one you require before listing the sources.

When Ed gets orders for parts this old, he usually contacts me, asks me to verify the numbers (he has no 1979 or older parts catalogs). You can tell him...up front...that I gave you the numbers.

Are you related to former VP Dan Quayle?

In any case Dennis Carpenter reproduces them in plastic.
The sleeve (B1AZ-3518-A) is nylon and why would Carpenter reproduce it...since it's still available from Ford?

The sleeve and C3DZ-3517-A bearing (also available from Ford) fit myriad FoMoCo Passenger Cars including 1965/66 Mustangs, and 1966/77 Bronco's.

Carpenter wants 10 bucks each for the sleeve, MSRP is $10.10 each. If you wanna pay MSRP, you can waltz over a few blocks to Don Sanderson Ford, buy 'em there...no shipping charges.

Red face Other questions for Bill

Bill (NumberDummy),

I don't know how to find you except.....
What other year and model can I find a 10" x 2-1/2" brake back plate. I'm trying to replace one on a '66 Shelby GT350. I hear Bronco's, Econolines.... what years. Heading to the salvage yard this weekend.

Thanks,

Steve
