Sounds like parking brake cable is not releasing all the way( cable seized)
Also make sure you have the correct shoes in the correct spot.

(probably not the cause but a double-check anyways...)

My brother ran into something similar where he couldn't get the drum back on and it turned out he had put the adjustment screw on the ends of the shoes instead of in the designated slots.

I appreciate all the advice. Everything should be on right. I did both sides but only had trouble with the drivers side. New drums too so there is no groove. It has been raining here for a few days but I might catch a brake tomorrow. Not looking to take it apart in the rain.
The half moons at the top are what I was talking about. The one side would kick out when I tried to center. The parking brake seems like the only logical explanation at this point. Could be the cable if its only doing it on one side.

Finally had a chance to take it apart again. The drum came off kinda easy and everything looks like its in place now. Bleeding must have shifted it into place. The only thing i noticed is that the retainer, little oval looking washer type thing, that holds one end of the parking brake spring is missing. It was there in the pic before i took it apart but must have lost it. Its the spring on the flat bar that goes across the middle between the shoes. Would the lack of a retailer cause this to not work properly?

Generally all the parts have some task to do. The manufacturers don't put them there because they like to spend extra money & complicate things. Many of these little clips & springs are sold on the aftermarket in a small parts kit.

Thats what I figured. It makes the spring a little loser without it.
Thing is though, it seems to be still to tight for the drum.
I just took it out and drove it and the one side with the problem is still noticeably dragging. So much that it slows the truck down when let off the fuel. That one also, was very hot when I parked it.

Decided to go ahead and take it completely apart again because something is still not right.
Went back together the same. You can see in the first pic how much it is off center. Im wondering if its the Chinese AC Delco shoes I used?
The last picture is the problem shoe. You can see where the wear is and its much more than the other side. Doesn't look too burt but I sure could smell it after driving.

Try swapping the drums. Maybe an out of round/spec drum?

Sometimes you can center them up some once it is all put together. Pull out from the backing plate just a little and bump it to the right.

I don't think it is your problem, but the triangular Shoe Guide Plate (2028) is on upside down.

I ran into this on some new crap chinese drums. you may have the same problem.

How tight is the center of your drum where it slides over the raised snout on the axle ? if it's loose at all there is your problem. if the drum isn't PERFECTLY and tightly held here it will be off center and you'll have fits .

I would take the shoes back off and see how the lining fits against the drums surface.

Tried putting the old drum back on which wasnt too bad anyway. Same problem. That rules out the drum.
Would it make any difference to swap the shoes? If one was made wrong it might make a difference.
Cant send these parts back anyway, i have had them too long.

In your pic, the front and rear shoes look identical — are they? Actually at least on mine, the pad on the primary shoe (that’s the one towards the front of the vehicle) — should be smaller than the one on the rear shoe by a couple of inches. The shoes themselves are the same size, but the pads are different. In your pic, it looks like you may have put two secondary (or, rear) shoes on the same side. Maybe check the passenger side again and see if maybe you put the two “smaller” ones on that side? At first glance all four new shoes look identical when you pull them out of the box, and they are easy to mix up. Ask me how I know that.

Look at the linings of the two shoes here. Front and back should be different. The larger lining should go on the rear only. Check your passenger side.

Good call twoodworth77. I bet that whatever it is, it is simple and has just been overlooked.

How do u know that? Lol
Good call, i didnt notice. In the box it had 2 wrapped together in cellophane and 2 others wrapped together in cellophane. I just grabbed 2 that were together and put them on. Since i didn't notice any difference between the 2 in my hands, i thought it wouldn't matter which one went on the front and which the back. Wonder why they would wrap 2 likes together instead of a match set, if that is the case?
Now its supposed to rain here for at least a week so it will be awhile before i can take it apart again.
Thank you
