@Rot Box 2 , were you able to set a clear path forward? If so, what did you decide on? Rare or not, threads like this don't come along often and it is interesting to see the owners set a course of action and move forward with it.

huh..
very rare, I think not.
I’m confused by this post.

The ZF5’s were being ‘used up’ as the SuperDuty line came out. I have personally seen 3 ZF5 SD’s and they were all E99. I also have an E99 here that has a build date of 11/97 with a ZF6. Last year, I also had a ‘97 OBS here with a 12/97 build date.

Anyway, I’ve seen some oddball stuff that ford did in the transition years and nothing surprises me. I have often imagined the guys on the assembly line picking parts off the back of the shelves and ‘making it work’ with what they had...

We see D60 front axles sprinkled in as the D50 was phased out and the same with PMR’s as the forged rods were phased out.

So yeah, a factory ZF5 in a model year 2000 truck would be really rare!

Was this ZF5 phenomenon using up old parts, or an uncharge trick? Manufacturers do things like this...make a great new 6 speed, but you want to charge extra money for it, so you keep the 5 speed around as your "base" transmission. Then you get to charge more for the latest and greatest.

I haven’t moved forward on this just yet. On my next days off I’ll swing by the Ford dealer and poke around to see what is available from them.

Thanks for all the input everyone I will post up with what I find.

On a side note I was told this truck was ‘probably’ swapped to a ZF5 but everything looks so factory the steering column cover is certainly from a manual truck and they even went to the extent of covering up the gear indicator on the gauge cluster.. the cutout for the transfer case lever on the floor is factory as well. It might be a factory five speed either that or the swap was very well/professionally done. It does have an automatic transmission cooler unhooked in the factory location so it’s hard to say what’s going on here.

Making a swap look factory isn't too hard, the 4wd switch on the dash is my only tell.

in looking closer at the photo you posted earlier you have the "short" auto trans hump, it's a swap.
