I have an issue with my 226 in my 1950 F1. I’m sure I caused it when I cross wired my generator when I reinstalled it. I had it running a few weeks ago, but while I had the radiator out of it I decided to remove the generator and clean it up. When I reinstalled it I wired the field and ground wires backwards and now I don’t have spark. There’s power to the coil. Any thoughts on what I might have fried?
It sounds like a separate issue to me anyway, which would be quite a coincidence though. I want to say with the cross wiring of FIeld to Ground between the two units that your voltage regulator could be damaged...maybe. But that wouldn't explain why do don't have spark. I would try to get the spark back and then trouble shoot any charging issues from there. (Assuming we are talking stock 6 volt positive ground.) Did you check for spark at the coil itself? Such as disconnecting the distributor from the coil, both the + side wire to the distributor and the coil to distributor cap wire, place the cap wire in a spark tester or hold the lead about 1/8 inch to the block , have someone turn on the ignition and have them with a test lead temporarily touch the distributor + terminal to ground. When you lift or break that connection you should get spark. If you get spark with that test then it's a probably a points or condenser issue under the distributor cap. If still no spark check your coil for IGN or - side terminal with a voltmeter for approx 6 volts. If you have 6 volts, but no spark on a temporary ground/ break you lost your coil.
Separate issues. The two circuits are not interconnected. If you cross-connected the field and ground nothing would happen, literally. Meaning it wouldn't charge either. No damage done.
The coil feed wire is in the generator harness or it should be just maybe it got broken
when you fiddled with the generator wires. thats possible with brittle wires
