I don't have much experience with suspension and old trucks but was quoted 7k to do a drop and c notch in rear and then lower the front suspension as well. I am trying to spend around 1k on parts and labor or do it myself. Is there any videos out there that people have made to do the reverse axles in front and back. I don't need to slam the truck just want to level it out a bit and get rid of the rake. I am going to run probably an 18 inch wheel as well. I don't have a welder, is there any way to tackle this in your own garage with basic tools. I have searched all of you tube and cant find anything for a 58 drop.
While I`m not sure how much you want to drop the rear end, taking some of the leaves out of the spring pack will lower it a bit. Here is an older thread that may give you some ideas: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...f-my-54-a.html
Good luck on spending 1k. you will soon find out that figure will be out the window. Are you wanting to stay stock? you can do another front end, mustang !! ect. Also if you C notch it that will put it real low. There are other ways to drop your truck with springs, hangers ect. BTW welcome to FTE
Give Sid from Dropped axles a call. He has rear adjustable hangers that you can bolt on (once you remove the original hangers) and rear extended shackles.
for the front he can drop your axle up to 3 inches.
As a very rough guide, for $1200 you should be able to get all the hardware (not including shipping). You will also need new shocks front and rear, so that bumps up the price.
Front
- 3 inch dropped front axle
- dropped tie rod ends
- drag link
- 1 inch tie rod
- kingpin set
- 4 deg caster wedges
- spring bushings (LMC,DC)
The rear is easy, you can complete it in a day.
The front is a bit trickier, you have to take the king pins out and have a machine shop install new bushings and have them hone the bushings to suit the new king pins. While you have the front disassembled make sure that you get all new spring bushings for the front leaf springs (extra cost, try LMC, DC) and Check with Sid to see if the rear adjustable hangers come with bushings.
You will need to complete the suspension front and rear, then take a measurement of you drag link and remove the spindle arm and heat it with a oxy torch and lower it to the required height so it is parallel to the ground at ride height- let it cool slowly naturally and reinstall and see how it looks (this will minimize bump steer) Make sure you take lots of measurements so you only lower the spindle arm and not move it any other direction.
this will get you to a decent height without breaking the bank.
I would disassemble the front and send the spindles to have the new king pins fitted and while you wait, start on the rear. That way you should be finished by the time the spindles are ready. If you’re unsure just send the whole axle in and have them reassemble it or ask Sid if he does this.
