I posted about 2 months ago about looking for a new f450. I couldn't find one then and only marginally easier now. Dealers won't return calls, want deposits, don't even talk price because it must be so easy to sell them. Large dealer in Ohio wants a$5000 deposit to put my name on a 2021 due in December.
These are different times, no doubt. But I've never put a deposit on a truck. This will be my seventh new purchase. Am I in the wrong here? Should I just accept that this is the way it is? Sticks in my craw a little. We haven't even discussed price or trade in!
It doesn't really make sense for them to be wanting these large deposits due to the current "situation". Deposits are to make sure you actually come back for the vehicle and they don't get stuck with it. Unless you are ordering a very unusual configuration, considering the current situation there is little to no chance the dealership will be stuck with it.
Pure taking advantage of a customer!
I ordered my 2020 in August with x-plan and no money down, no questions asked.
Deposits are only an expression of your desire for them to get you a truck. There is nothing legally significant going on. Even if the dealer orders your truck and you renege, you get your deposit back. The deposit is usually just a token amount. Five thousand dollars is absurd. It sounds like the dealer was trying to NOT do business with you.

I don't like deposits but understand , but just barely. I did think the amount is crazy!
I'm glad to see I'm not crazy on my opinion of deposits
I put $1k down on a '20 special order. The only reason the dealer required it for the order is that I highly optioned a lariat and then got carpet delete. He said if I didn't delete the carpet, they wouldn't have required it.

I was expecting my dealer to want a deposit for ordering a Platinum with Vinyl floors, but they said no need. No prior dealing with them, basically off the street walk in order.
Other dealer I went to wanted deposit no matter what, not sure amount because they said MSRP only, not even xplan, so I walked fast.
