All,
I was just on tow very recently with my 12k toy hauler. I was on a hill and put the truck in park To park the trailer on top of blocks. The weight of the trailer pulled the truck backwards off the blocks and stopped. However, to get out of park I got a huge boom in the transmission due to all the weight having it bound up.
Now when coming up to a stop sign, I get a weird ratchet like sound. When I put the truck on jack stands and rotate the drive shaft, I can hear the ratcheting in the transmission. Any ideas of what I damaged. I assume this isn’t normal. I tried to attach a small video, but the site won’t let me.
thanks for any help

Reason: Title
JMHO but sounds like the parking pawl is not fully releasing. Something might have bent when you were forced to remove it from park? I would contact a reliable transmission shop and query them. Maybe ask this question over in this forum and maybe Mark will respond.
The parking pawl is broken. This is why putting the truck in park and letting it roll back is terrible. Always set parking brake first and chock if heavy. The 6R140 doesn't have a parking gear in heavier trucks for this reason.

Thanks for the feedback. I am starting to look for a complete trans. Not really much for quality transmission shops in my area.
You're going to replace the entire transmission due to a parking pawl? That seems excessive.
Mark,
I plan on getting quotes to fix the parking pawl from local sources. However, I am looking at complete transmissions in case they find other major problems and it needs more than the parking pawl fixed. Sorry, I am not always the best communicator-just ask my wife, lol.
I would have them rebuild yours rather than gamble on a used. Likely the same price In the end.
If on a hill or incline set parking brake and if possible chock the wheels. If it sets down hard on the pawl, After securing the vehicle to prevent a roll, disconnect the rear driveshaft as a last resort.
Using another vehicle to pull forward, just enough to take the pressure off could be another approach if you have the resources

Parking pawl can be replaced without transmission removal. Its on the output shaft. Most likely you will find the pin snapped that holds it.
Unfortunately it is not a back yard repair as easy it might have been on the 1960-1980's model transmissions but your local transmission shop can do it as an in-vehicle repair.
Just make sure they have the Output Shaft Locknut socket to remove the locknut.

Here is the procedure from Ford Workshop DVD.
thanks for the procedure. So I called a few places today. Almost all the tranny shops in my area have never worked on a 6R140. Which is good. It shows how good the transmissions are. Bad when you need someone experienced to work on it. I may try and tackle this myself. The procedure doesn’t look too bad.
I would see about the socket to get the shaft locknut off and then back on. The socket is kinda pricey but sure beats trying to use a punch to beat it off and then back on. Cheapest one on eBay was $217.
The thing I am having trouble with is finding other parts. I have a feeling the gear the pawl engages is damaged. I had to drive 1200 miles home with the damage. According to the procedure there is a gasket or two that has to be replaced as well. Any ideas where to find them? I have only been looking online for the parts-so far.
