Front buckets to 40/20/40

Has anyone ever attempted to switch from front bucket seats to a 40/20/40 front bench setup? In my truck, I have front buckets which are great but sometimes that silly little console between the buckets gets on my nerves. What I am trying to figure out is if I can take a 40/20/40 bench seat and swap it into the cab of my truck which currently has the front buckets. Next question is will the two 40 sections still operate like bucket seats and fold/slide forward to let people crawl into the back seat? In a perfect world, I would just keep my bucket seats and bolt in a center 20 section from the 40/20/40 setup where the plastic console is now. Any thoughts or previous experience or even if your truck has the 40/20/40 your opinion on that seat arrangement is appreciated.

The story is that front seats from a Supercab exchange with front seats from a Bronco (and front or rear seats from a crew cab exchage with the seat from a regular cab, but that doesn't matter to you now). So if you get 40/20/40 seats from a Supercab or Bronco they will bolt right in and work as intended, giving access to the rear seat.

It is probably possible to adapt crew or regular cab seats to your SuperCab as well. But it won't just be a bolt-in and they likely won't fold/slide forward.

edit to add: You asked about opinions on experience with 40/20/40 seats. I had them in my '95 SuperCab and again now in my '97 crew cab (also in my '08 and '02 SuperDuties, but those are different and don't count). I love the 40/20/40 seats. They are comfortable buckets with a nice arm rest and a big enough (for me) console. Plus there a little more "hidden storage" on the center seat below the folded down arm rest / seat back. Or you can turn it into a third seat when you need to fit another person in. And I fold it up when it's just me and my dog in the cab. Definitely my favorite seat option.

That’s my entire problem. We recently got a dog and long story short my wife can’t just leave her in the back seat when we go somewhere in the truck so I figured an easy solution would be to switch to a 40/20/40 bench across the front that way it’s like everyone has there own seat when they need it. Also, since you’ve had them before, I call the bucket seats Jeep seats mainly because I grew up in the back of a Jeep and the way my buckets fold forward are just the like seats in the Jeep. Is that how the 40 sections fold forward?

I traded the SuperCab in back in '07, so my memory on that version may be a bit suspect (the crew cab / regular cab seats don't move to give access to the back seat because they don't need to).

But what I recall the SuperCab seat doing was you released it and the back pivoted forward and the entire seat slid forward. On the driver's side you were a bit limited by the steering wheel, but on the passenger's side it gave enough room that we could buckle the little kids into their car seats fairly easily.

Just a thought

I have a '94 f150 extended cab that had a bench seat and I converted to bucket seats with a big empty space between them.. I didn't like any of the middle consoles. Just a thought, have you considered having someone make you a custom dog bed for that middle area..?

Although that is a fantastic idea, I don't think I would go that route. I am now desperately searching for ANY front buckets or 40/20/40 bench after a recent incident has left my driver's seat a pile of foam...

Also wondering if anyone knows what years are cross compatible. for example if I find two buckets from an 87 will they bolt into my 92. I am pretty sure that anything from 92 to 96 bronco or supercab will fit perfectly with very little modification (My current seats have the power lumbar). Ideally I would just reconstruct my existing seats with new foam but I can't find any pre-molded replacement foam. Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated.

In general, in my experience, if you use the mounting brackets from your existing seats (note, I only have personal experience with Bench and 50/50 Split Benches), they will bolt up to basically any bench seat from around 1967 until 1996, and fit right into your truck of the same year range. I can't speak the the 40/20/40 setup, as I've never personally tried it, I'm 99% certain it will work for buckets.

That’s what I was thinking. I appreciate the insight!

What I have done with other vehicles is, pull the seats out with brackets, take the brackets off.
Then mount/weld whatever seat you want onto the brackets.
Then they bolt in.

For the most part, all seat base frames are similar in size.
I have done this with a 90s Toyota bench seat bracket, removed the bench and installed 90s Dodge caravan buckets(super comfy seats).
Also have done this with my racing simulator(iRacing), had a Volvo seat base, welded to a Toyota MR2 bucket.

If there is a seat you really want in the truck, you'll figure out a way to get it in, just make sure its safe. You don't want the seat to rip off in an accident.

Here is what I did with my extended cab.. I started with a bench seat and didn't want to drill extra holes into my cab. I found the base that Ford uses in some of their trucks that have the 40/20/40 (bucket/console/bucket) configuration and didn't have to drill new holes.. I looked for seats to fit for a couple of months and found some old ones that made me sit way too high up.. had to tip toe the gas.. Fortunately, I found some bucket seats out of a PT cruiser that matched up almost perfectly.. I am still looking at doing something in the middle console area..

I looked for existing "other holes" - not there..

Or there..
