Engine and tranny combos?

Im looking at getting a 460 for my 77 F-150 project . The thing I need advice on is what would work best with that. A 5-speed or an automatic. I know there is benifits to both but I like that being able to shift yourself and tire spinning is so much easier in a manual. Any info would help. Also where would be a good place to go for tranny work or to get a tranny from for either automatic or manual. Thanks -77blueoval.

All depends on your driving likes. I like manuals, so of course, I'd say the 5 speed

My C6 works great in my 77. If you don't mind modifying the truck to accept a 5-speed, then that would work too.
I think that the C6 would be stronger though.

I agree with the strength, Lx. I had a C-6 in my '77 F-350 until I converted it to a 4-speed (love that creeper gear). Never gave me an ounce of trouble. I had a buddy who went through 3 5-speeds within the space of a year. Granted, there was a lot of off-roading involved, but I was right behind him the whole time. And yes,, he does know how to shift

I'm not sure, but I think all the newer 5 speeds used hydrolic clutches. So you would probably have to convert yours over to hydrolic.

The manual trannys for light trucks will not handle as much torque as a C6. The manuals don't slip like a C6 does (which makes heat). The manuals do not torque multiply like the auto will either tho, you can get twice as much torque thru the converter than the engine will put out at a given rpm.

You might check with the trans diff and axle forum for more info on what trannies will bolt to the 460.

This apply even for the diehard 3-speed with creeper, Torque? I had heard often they are basically indestructible. Got me worried now, lol

77blueoval ~

I'm new to the Ford scene and I'm more used to a Muncie 4 speed with close ratio gears sitting behind a 12.5:1 pop-ups in a 454 in front of a set of 5:13 cogs in the back....but the C-6 I put behind my 460 has proved to be very strong. I've overhauled a "few" C-6's in the past at Tim Timmers Chevrolet - they are a lot better than a C-4 automatic (plates and servos are a lot beefier)!!.....

I would check out eBay and see what they have for a C-6...

There is no "fun" with the C-6 as there is with a manual tranny and glass-pax....but this way I don't have to take my hand off the beer can as often, either....

I'd recommend the C-6 also. It is a very "hearty" transmission that can take abuse, not that you'd want to. But with your BB, you have plenty of horses to spare.
