So I did my oil change and I was told me to use SHELL ROTELLA® T4 TRIPLE PROTECTION DIESEL OIL because of the added additives and should be fine in my engine. now before I run the engine the oil level is fine, but I brought it to work today and checked the level it was really low, like half way to safe but then two hours later it is perfect again. should I change the oil to a lower viscosity or is this normal? has anyone ever experienced this before?
the pressure remains constant and the engine is recently rebuilt. they did however lose the dipstick tube and the replacement i got is slightly longer but I put around 6 liters into it. and it matches on the level. 1968 Mercury Ranger 360
Probably should change your oil filter brand. The easiest explanation here is your oil filter is filling at start and then draining back to the pan. This gives dry starts and isn't a good idea. Make sure to use a filter that has a good anti drain back valve.

I think this one is for somebody else, as it was reverse problem on mine.
Thank you, perhaps that fixed it as it is not doing that now, i drained a bit of oil to be better in the safe zone. fixed the high idle, there was a small kink in the throttle linkage. and maybe it was just too damn clean to see but i dont think thats it as it is not too hard to see. but either way now after just a couple minutes oil level is where it should be, maybe sooner but i only have checked after a few minutes.
I am using a PH8a fram filter.
Most engine builders use the Motorcraft FL-1A, or the WIX 1515. NAPA gold is made by WIX.
The anti drain back valve is important, and the Fram is a less expensive construction. Don't cheap out on the oil filter, a good filter is only 5 bucks.
Ford used to say in the operator's manual that the right oil filter was more important than the oil. Maybe. I don't know. I don't like to gamble though. I'll take their word for it.
I always use the Motorcraft FL-1A on both my FE360 and 351 Cleveland. I have the factory pan on my FE and I use 6 quarts....assumed 5 quarts for the pan and 1 for the filter?

BIG 2 X. It is important to filter the engine's life blood correctly.

Nope it was directed at your problem. Because everything you mentioned is directly linked to a horizontal mounted oil filter and a oil filter with a bad bypass. Now that we know you have a Fram installed with a basic bypass the problem is obvious. Step to a oil filter that uses a silicone anti drain back valve. Easy to spot as they are red instead of black. The Fram XG8A is available easily, so is the Motorcraft Fl1a and the Wix Gold & Platinum filters.
