My DEF gauge takes minutes to reflect any filling activity. My fuel gauge I can watch move in real time. For some reason, the DEF gauge takes forever to register any additions. Hopefully, all you experienced was that normal lag.

I usually let the DEF gauge get to about 1/4 to 1/2, then fill it at the truck stop pump. Its usually about 2 something a gallon there. makes it pretty easy...
