Shorty headers and Flutter
I have a 2001 EX that I just put a new motor into. I opened up the exhaust with a single 3 inch into a 70 series. I have a small resonator on to kill the drone from the 40 I had in there.
Somehow the cat never made it back in the exhaust! We cut the restrictions out of the y pipe and ran 2.5 inch all the way into a dual 2.5 inch to 3 inch collector. My truck sounded awesome until this! Now I have flutter and its annoying! I lost alot of low end torque so we took the 40 off and put the 70 on. It seemed to help but the flutter was extremely loud. At this point, we necked down the y pipe using small sections of 2 inch (factory neck down is 1.5). This helped alot, restored alot of power and killed about 50 percent of my flutter. Its still aweful though.
My question is, can a set of good shorty headers like gibson correct the flutter noise? Has anyone ran a set of shorty headers and custom y pipe and had good results. I would spend money on Tri-y's or banks but I have this set of gibsons for cheap if I want them.
Here is another crazy question.. There are chinese tri-y's all over the net. Has anyone tried these 300 dollar doug thorley knock off's?
Drill bit wanted to walk, so I used the header flange as a template
Factory 2004 Y pipe
SPD Y pipe from 5 Star Tuning

Maybe a semi stupid question, but what exactly does does this awful flutter sound like? I have run mine hard with the factory setup, with Banks headers and Y pipe with the balance of the factory exhaust, same but with the muffler replaced with an Aeroturbine (Jones) 3030XL (with resonator built in) and with the muffler removed and a straight pipe in its place. I haven't heard anything that didn't sound completely normal with any of those setups, even now with the headers factory 3" pipe and no muffler I don't have any flutter or drone. I'm thinking that maybe you might want to find that missing cat and put it back in. Why did it get left out, was it proven to be clogged or fouled in some other way? With my various changes there hasn't been any loss in low end torque, it would be pretty obvious if there was as the EX is the dedicated tow rig for our 12K TT. I think long tube headers like the Banks setup are better for low RPM torque compared to shorties.
