I am helping a friend replace his injector cups and when we pulled out injector #1 we found this pitting (not galling) on the front. Should he be concerned?
I think cups 1 and 3 were both the culprits of the fuel in the coolant. Both had the same coloring and small fissures in the bottoms.
The cup with this injector had a burnt reddish color inside of it. I saw nothing in the head that looked any different than the others.
We put the new cups in last night and all injectors are back in the truck....the truck ran just fine before, so this was a surprise.
Well, I advised my friend to look at replacing that injector, but he wanted to take his truck home. I put it back in for now.
Truck smoked for about 10 mins then cleared up. He says there is no noticeable loss of power after the air was worked out.
That was my first time taking out injectors and replacing all 8 cups. What a pain in the butt....I cant imagine doing that job without Clay's tool though.
FWIW, the oring seals from the bottom of the groove to the cup. If you really want to do it some good, tape up the whole thing except that oring groove, cut strips of 320 sandpaper that width, and clean up that groove.
I don't remember seeing one that bad. Maybe it was a bad casting that deteriorated under heat? How'd the copper crush washer look?
Crush washer looked like all the others.....cup had a bit of a reddish tint inside of it and had a hairline crack at the base.
Fat Diesel - I cleaned the groove out to a shine. This pic was taken just after I pulled out the o rings.
I did recommend to him that he should replace this particular injector....I think he is going to save up for new ones and just replace them all at once.
