How Do i get 350 hp

My dad has a 78 ford van with a 351 Windsor in it and he would like to rebuild it and get around 350 hp out of it and 350+ ft/lbs of torque. What would be the easiest budget minded way to get these numbers out of that engine. I was thinking a cam, intake and 4 barrel carb would be good. Fuel milage is a concern I would like to keep stock compression.

I would guess that a comp cams extreme energy cam, a 600 cfm 4 barrel on a Performer intake, a three angle valve job, 9:1 pistons and headers with a free flowing exhaust. That is the set up that I went with on my rebuild, but don't have it in the truck yet, even after I get it in, I'll probably never DYNO it, but I'm guessing that I'm close to where you want to be. ...I'm hoping anyways.

clean79150 pretty much got it.

I would keep the cam in the 260 advertised degree range. The Comp XE256 will give you a good flat torque curve. Use this cam with 9.1 to 9.5 (no more) static compression. Specs- 256/262 adv duration - 212/218 deg duration @.050 lift - .477/.484 gross lift on a 110 deg LSA.

Stock rebuilt heads will work fine with this cam as long as you use the recommended springs.

Performer intake with a 600 cfm carb for low end torque and MPG or a 750 cfm (at most) for upper rpm power. 1 5/8" long tube headers are the best choice if available. If not "run what ya have".

HP numbers may be close to 320 but the TQ will be in the mid to upper 300's throughout the useable RPM range, just what you want for that heavy van.

As far as the rebuild kit - cast pistons will be fine for your app. Have the crank and rods inspected and resized to reuse if possible (more than likely).

YOu can get long tubes to work and if possible that would be the way to go, just a thought. No one mentioned it but if you wanted to kick the cam up a notch you could opt for a higher stall speed converter and 3.73 or 4.10:1 rear gears, that is if you wanted to hot rod the van even a next up level converter over stock would improve your idle and initial power that goes for any motor built or not. Just a note, higher compression pistons actually make a motor more efficient and will increase mpg if used so don't rule out higher compression pistons they will increase throttle response as well but whatever you do make sure you pick the cam last or build the motor around the cam. That way everything is on the same page. Just a thought, good luck with your engine build, let us know how it goes

Sounds like a winner. YOu might consider replaceing the cam with a comp cam as it would seem a little more radical, that is if you wanna squeeze every ounce of hp and tq out of it. Otherwise the performer package will be just right and the edelbrock is an easy carb to work with. Later

dont put a 600 cfm carb on it if you want performance, go with a 750. DW

650 is okay if you plan on staying low rpm, but you go look at every 351w build-up in any magazine and it has either 750 or 780 cfm carb a 750 cfm properly tuned and jetted for the motor, is not gona kill your bottom end, but with a smaller carb you'll loose air flow and velocity in the upper half of the rpm/power band. Just my thoughts here, DW
P.S. if you want low end tork. then as tempting as that big loopy sounding cam is, don't over cam the motor.
