There's never been a 400 that was anything special either.
But there were a few early ones that were dual pattern on the transmission mounting. if it isn't drilled for the large pattern you can do it yourself though it would be more of a PITA than it's worth in my opinion. just look at it and see.
Appears to be the rare dual pattern block. Worth a few bucks to the right individual. these dual pattern blocks allow for the use of the AOD or AODE 4r70/75W behind them.
The FMX trans has the lowest parasitic loses of any of the Ford 3 Speeds and was very popular as a drag tranny back in the day unitl the rise of the lighter C4. The FMX and could be built to take some big power numbers. The FMX was the foundation for the AOD and it's sucsessors Any one that knows about Ford tranny's does not malign the FMX But today there are cheaper lighter options available with better parts avaibilty. The FMX today still has some use especially if you looking for a low parasitic loss Ford 3 speed than can the power of a V8
Can't argue the FMX wasn't slightly more power efficient . but the fact is the only reason Ford used them later on was because they couldn't produce the others fast enough. funny though how they only used them in the garbage granny cars for some reason though isn't it ? go figure.
