Hi everyone I recently picked up a 2002 7.3 my problem is the glow plugs won't activate. I understand the workings of the relay but the problem dose not seem to be so simple. The glow plug indicator light comes on as usual when key is turned on but it stays on for as long as the truck is kept on. Pevous owner did state that the prevous relay had melted and instead of fixing they hard wired a switch to the post to manually start the plugs. I replaced the relay but it still isn't working. Any advise would be great. Winter is coming.
The glow plug light in the dash is just a notice that comes on every time we turn the key on, it is not connected to the GPR in any way. I'm thinking that it is controlled by the PCM and constant on indicates a problem with the PCM, maybe someone else can confirm that or correct me. A picture of your GPR and surrounding area would be helpful right now. Then we can go from there.
There are hundreds of images online and here on the FTE on how to wire the GPR. There may be one or two in the 7.3L PSD Tech Folder, but I don't remember for sure...
I have attached a GPR wiring diagram from the Ford Service Manual, this may help along with an image that you find.

Really not too bad if you are looking at a specific component, then can identify the wire colors and the circuit ID. I am not "good" at it, but I can do enough to get myself into trouble and sometimes out of trouble.
I think when he said return to stock he meant disconnect the hardwire switch and reconnect the PCM wire. I agree with Walleye that if your wait to start light is staying on all the time you may have a PCM issue. Lots of people have had their PCM's go bad and not send the ground signal to turn on the Glow plug system. Many just went the "switch in the cab" route rather than have the PCM rebuilt or buy a replacement. I don't remember many that said the wait to start light stayed on. As long as everything else is working and you can live with the light then just use the switch. If you want to fix it right you may want to consider sending your PCM off for repair.
When you say" factory configuration " what exactly do you mean? The trucks motor is all stock besides a cold air intake .
I mean take out the hardwire and switch the previous owner had put in and make sure the PCM is controlling the GPR like the manufacturer designed it to.
